The Three Ravens Podcast
Andrew Michael Hurley | Local Legends #78
For our opening installment of Three Ravens Haunting Season 2026 we're chatting with one of Britain's finest horror writers, Andrew Michael Hurley.
Based in Lancashire in north west England, Andrew's debut novel The Loney was published almost exactly 12 years ago, becoming a best-seller, winning prizes, and securing Andrew a legion of readers extremely keen to know how he might possibly follow it up.
His second book, Devil's Day, secured his reputation as an extraordinary talent, with his third, Starve Acre, also being brilliant, and adapted into an excellent major motion picture.
Other wonderful, unsettling, folk-infused short stories and novels have followed, including, most recently, Saltwash. But what is Andrew like? Does he buy into the kinds of sinister magic he writes about? How does he feel about the 'folk horror' genre? Which writers inspire him, and, if pressed, what's his favourite ghost story?
We dig into all that and much more, so gather in close around the campfire and settle in...

01:19:11||Season 666, Ep. 37The lights dim, the sounds of ghostly strings tuning up shriek from the orchestra pit, and in the wings the props just seem to keep mysteriously vanishing...Happy Haunting Season! This episode marks the beginning of our four themed weeks, and today we're talking all about Ghosts of the Theatre. We begin by talking about some famous theatre ghosts, along with a brief history of theatrical hauntings. Of course, our show wouldn't be complete without a sprinkle of superstitions. With an interval ice cream courtesy of a floating head and a programme packed with the dramatic dead, we're ready for our showstoppers - the two winning entries in this category to our Ghost Story Writing competition.Congratulations to TJ Rankin, with 'A Universe of Our Own Terrors', and Helena Langford with 'The Playhouse' - very different stories we had great fun reading. So settle in for this evening's entertainment, try not to cough in the serious bits - and don't, whatever you do, mention the name of the Scottish play...About Three Ravens 🔮Three Ravens is a completely independent English myth and folklore podcast where we share stories, celebrate folk culture, and fall backwards through the hedgerows of history.Hosted by real-life couple Eleanor Conlon and Martin Vaux, and mostly recorded at our home in rural Sussex in southern England, Three Ravens is rated 4.8/5 from over 500 reviews and has grown by word of mouth care of our lovely listener community ‘The Conspiracy of Ravens.’We release three episodes a week, on Mondays, Thursday and Saturdays, through which we explore folktales, folkways, fairy stories, folk songs, mythology, local heritage, seasonal customs and traditional beliefs. Our research inspires our retellings of stories from across history and culture, with episodes standing alone but connected together across over 500 chatty, mostly light-hearted, swear-free installments driven by passion, kindness and curiosity. Now ranked as an all-time Top 5 podcast across several categories by Goodpods, charting in the Spotify, Apple and Rephonic UK Fiction Top 10 across 2024, 2025 and 2026, if you’re interested in ghosts, monsters, regional beliefs, and the things that unite us all, then join us round the campfire and listen in…Join the Conspiracy of Ravens ✨🌐 Official Website: Visit the Three Ravens Podcast Official Site to sign up for our mailing list, explore our episode catalogue, and enjoy our blog!🎤 Three Ravens Live: Find tickets and news about our upcoming live shows!🛒 Shop: Buy our books and exclusive Three Ravens Merch including mugs, tote bags, tees and hoodies from our Online Shop👑 Patreon: Support the show and unlock ad free listening, monthly Patreon exclusive episodes, the Three Ravens Film Club, our community chat and newsletters at the Three Ravens Patreon📚 Our First Book: Buy our stunning hardback collection of 39 historic stories Three Ravens Folk Tales👻 Our Second Book: Order our brand new hair-raising host of 20 original ghost stories Three Ravens Ghost Tales 🏴 Our Third Book: Preorder our upcoming collection of Welsh regional legends Three Ravens Folk Tales of Wales coming to all good bookshops on St David's Day (March 1st) 2027📱 Socials: Follow our adventures and help us grow on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok
36. Three Ravens Ghost Tales Book Launch | Live @ Much Ado Books
01:04:25||Season 666, Ep. 36Recorded a week ago today and hosted by our favourite local independent bookshop Much Ado Books in Alfriston, we warmly present a live interview to celebrate the launch of our second book Three Ravens Ghost Tales.Much Ado Books is particularly special to us as we went to the shop on one of our first-ever dates, Eleanor buying Martin a beautiful Folio Society edition of the collected poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Though for this recording it was not the Ancient Mariner fixing us with his glittering eye but Much Ado's co-owner Nash Robbins! With Nash asking the questions, we discuss Three Ravens and the work that goes into professional podcasting, the legacy of M.R. James, our interests in magic and the supernatural, what goes into a good ghost story, and the approaches we take to writing and rewriting stories. With a Q&A session that follows, if this is the first episode of Three Ravens you ever hear then hopefully it serves as a good introduction, and if you're a longstanding member of the Conspiracy of Ravens then fingers crossed it offers new details and discussions of the inspirations behind some of the scariest stories we've ever written. If you are ever in Sussex, Much Ado Books is an award-winning independent bookshop in the medieval village of Alfriston. The shop offers a curated selection of new, second-hand, and antiquarian books spread across two floors, a shepherd's hut, and a cabin dedicated to arts and letters. Through their Prospero Project Nash and his wife Cate Olsen, originally from New England, donate books to and raise funds for local and international charities, schools, and care homes.Visit the Much Ado Books website here.About Three Ravens 🔮Three Ravens is a completely independent English myth and folklore podcast where we share stories, celebrate folk culture, and fall backwards through the hedgerows of history.Hosted by real-life couple Eleanor Conlon and Martin Vaux, and mostly recorded at our home in rural Sussex in southern England, Three Ravens is rated 4.8/5 from over 500 reviews and has grown by word of mouth care of our lovely listener community ‘The Conspiracy of Ravens.’We release three episodes a week, on Mondays, Thursday and Saturdays, through which we explore folktales, folkways, fairy stories, folk songs, mythology, local heritage, seasonal customs and traditional beliefs.

21. Chocorua | A New Hampshire Tale
01:30:05||Season 8, Ep. 21For this week's story we're throwing caution to the wind, preparing for societal collapse, and offering you a different kind of folk nightmare.Written by Martin, Chocorua follows the main story beats of one of New Hampshire's most famous legends, only with the titular Native American chief replaced by a radicalized white nationalist struggling through the Covid-19 pandemic. It might not make for comforting listening, but if you're up for a nightmarish, paranoid, tech-savvy survivalist thriller then this one is for you - and if you're not, well, we hope you'll give it a try anyway, as we're pretty sure you won't have heard anything quite like it before.Drawing on Lydia Maria Child's fictional tale "Chocorua's Curse" as published in The Token magazine in 1830, and long years attempting to understand the mindset of America's radical Libertarians, it a offers a look over the edge and into the abyss where hopefully, despite everything, something sympathetic looks back...About Three Ravens 🔮Three Ravens is a completely independent English myth and folklore podcast where we share stories, celebrate folk culture, and fall backwards through the hedgerows of history.Hosted by real-life couple Eleanor Conlon and Martin Vaux, and mostly recorded at our home in rural Sussex in southern England, Three Ravens is rated 4.8/5 from over 500 reviews and has grown by word of mouth care of our lovely listener community ‘The Conspiracy of Ravens.’We release three episodes a week, on Mondays, Thursday and Saturdays, through which we explore folktales, folkways, fairy stories, folk songs, mythology, local heritage, seasonal customs and traditional beliefs.
