Episode 228: Microtonal
Today on the podcast I am joined by Cameron Johnston of the Death Thrash Belfast band, Microtonal!
Since their formation in 2023, Microtonal have been determined to bring metal back to it's aggressive and fear inducing roots, such as Demolition Hammer, Slayer, Sepultura, Death and Exhorder. With an extreme and explosive sound, their lyrics are also equally as intense, exploring themes like anti religion, civil unrest, injustice and corruption alongside other societal and governmental issues.
They released their debut EP, 'Baptism by Fire' which features such brilliant songs, like 'Dark Side' and 'Forsaken'.
I'll be chatting with Cameron about the band's inception, where their name came from, covering their debut EP and having a deep chat about what makes Thrash Metal so awesome.
Microtonal are through to the Grand Final of Metal 2 The Masses NI, which is going to be held on the 8th May. On top of this, they'll be opening for Uncultivates on July 3rd in Lost Lane as part of the band's Album release tour.

42:18||Season 7, Ep. 30Today I am joined on the podcast by Voyd of the Enniskillen Death Metal band, Necromaton!Necromaton was formed in 2025 by brothers Voyd (bass/vocals) and Rony (guitar/vocals), both veterans of their old band Gargantuan. Completing the Necromaton lineup are Brian (guitar) and Shea (drums). They have already released a self-titled demo in January 2026 that I cannot recommend enough!Thematically, they explore their own satirical fictional concept, Necromaton: a totalitarian cyber-parasite empire engineered for self-perpetuation through subjugation and manipulation.I'll be chatting with Voyd about how this band started, the concepts that go into their lyrics, how their first ever gig was in Czech Republic and what the band has in store for the rest of 2026, which includes work on their debut album!Necromaton will be the headliner act for Templemore's Metalfest tomorrow so make sure to catch them at that unreal festival!Necromaton on BandcampOutsound at Sin E!Uncultivates live at Lost LaneSpaced W/ Dry Socket live at Lost Lane

54:26||Season 7, Ep. 27Today on the podcast I am delighted to say that I am going to be joined by two amazing artists, who are Drew of the Grindcore band See You Next Tuesday and the one man noisegrind act,CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP (aka Chop7Times, Chop7x, Chopx7) from New Haven, CT. Together these two artists have created one of my favourite releases of the year, a collaborative EP titled 'Brothers'.This collaborative release is based off of a book entitled The Brothers’ War, a 1998 fantasy novel by Jeff Grubb; it is the first book in the Magic: The Gathering: Artifacts Cycle, detailing the epic conflict between brothers Urza and Mishra on the world of Dominaria. The book explores the origins of Urza and the magical and technological arms race that leads to cataclysmic events. For the album, side A, See You Next Tuesday’s Chris wrote his lyrics based on the perspective of the Brother Urza, while Chop wrote his lyrics from Mishra's perspective for side B.We are going to be going through the entire EP, talking about how this collaboration began, why they choose 'The Brothers War' as the inspiration for the EP and how it was used to construct the music, Magic The Gathering and their awesome music video, 'Old Thoughts, and Regrets'. The EP is available for purchase now in two vinyl forms, digitally on Bandcamp and will be available for streaming on May 15th, this Friday!Purchase 'Brothers' on Vinyl
