The Weekly Planet

In between Blade Runner, original Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049 there exists a movie positioned snugly in the middle, set in Ridley Scott's groundbreaking universe. 1998's Soldier, starring Kurt Russell and directed by Paul WS Anderson, was written by Blade Runner scribe David Webb Peoples and incorporates many elements from the 1982 original directed by Ridley Scott. It's mostly small visual cues and blink and you miss it easter eggs, but this is unmistakably supposed to take place after the origins events from 2019. None of it makes the movie better. Doesn't make it worse, though. But it's still all not very good. It's impossible to list all the visual design elements, tropes and world building that Blade Runner had on popular culture upon its initial release in 1982. Despite bombing in a most spectacular fashion Ridley Scott managed to literally redefined the future of sci-fi despite the atrocious Harrison Ford/Rick Deckard's voice over. Here we look at the definitive version from 2007 that restores original scenes, removes others including said voice over and changes the ending in a manner that completely alters the meaning of the entire film. RESIDENT EVIL. That's right we're back to talk the eighth movie (second reboot) of the video game to movie franchise this time directed by Zach Cregger of weapons fame. A lot of people are excited by that whilst some particular fans of the franchise are definitely not. We also discuss the poor reception of Zack Snyder's The Last Photograph and wanting to adapt The Dark Knight Returns, some Man of Tomorrow updates, the potential of Lanterns Season 2, weird unit Tom Cruise is on an absolute media tear the only way he knows how (being a normal man) and a whole lot more. Our long and winding tour down the Resident Evil road is coming to an end with The Final Chapter. Time to say goodbye to Milla Jovovich's Alice and the one or two other characters that they bothered to bring back in this sixth entry. The stakes have never been higher! The clock is ticking on the 27 people left on planet earth to release an anti-virus which would stop all the Resident Evil in its tracks. And there's secrets to be revealed! Secrets that don't make any sense especially if you've been paying attention to any of these movies which we have sort of. We've been looking at the Paul WS Anderson/Milla Jovovich Resident Evil movies for what feels like one hundred million years. And it's a crying shame that all of us are coming to realise that these movies might not actually be good. In addition to Alice coming back as always we also get the return of Michelle Rodriguez, Colin Salmon and Oded Fehr characters confirmed long dead. PLUS the introduction of more beloved game characters Leon S. Kennedy and Ada Wong! All this feels like it should add up to something but we're sorry to report that is not the case. BOO. Sorry that wasn't okay. But what is okay is that we're talking the greatest jumping the shark moments from across tv and film. James Bond, Indiana Jones, Heroes, several others. We also talk Avengers: Doomsday filming before the script is finished, a weird Robin Hood rebrand for Andrew Garfield's new movie, Dave Bautista getting big again for God of War, Peter Cullen's final performance as Optimus Prime, trailers for Harry Potter and Streeth Fighter and more! Oh no it looks as if the Resident Evil movies might be on the decline after the incredible (by Resident Evil movie standards) third entry. Paul WS Anderson finally returns as director for Afterlife, a movie that takes some elements from the previous movies (Alice clones, the character of Kmart, not being able to remember your memories) and hits the ground running in what many are describing as a movie they might have seen around the time it came out but it's actually impossible to say. It does have the first appearance of Chris Redfield as played by Wentworth Miller. But don't get attached.
