Christopher Rufo on Critical Race Theory in Schools

Critical race theory is making its way into institutions across America.

Christopher Rufo, a visiting fellow for domestic policy studies at The Heritage Foundation, joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss how critical race theory is affecting what children learn in schools. (The Daily Signal is Heritage's multimedia news outlet.)

"Critical race theory is an academic discipline ... that holds that racism is the driving force in society, that in order to understand power relations, in order to understand institutions such as the law, education, the Constitution, [and] social relations, you have to understand that through the lens of race," Rufo, also a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, says.

Rufo explains how critical race theory is affecting corporate America and what can be done about it.

We also cover these stories:

  • Tim Carney on America's Baby Bust

    28:30
How could America shift so babies were more welcomed, less dreaded?Tim Carney, author of the new book “Family Unfriendly: How Our Culture Made Raising Kids Much Harder Than It Needs to Be,” has a few ideas. He’d like to see corporations offer parents their child’s birthday off every year. He wants parents to not work so hard at parenting—and to never, ever, sign up their kids for a travel sports team. He’d like to see local governments prioritize sidewalks and denser housing, which would make neighborhoods safer for kids. But he also wants us to think about why we have a falling birth rate—and what it says about us. After World War II, America had a baby boom, while Germany experienced a baby bust. Now, we’re struggling with our own baby bust, even as we are hammered by relentless discussions of America’s failures, the threat of climate change, and more. “The spirit of the age now is what I call civilizational sadness,” says Carney. “And the sadness is a belief that we’re just not good or that humans were a mistake.”Enjoy the show!

  • She Survived Terrorist Attacks to Become Voice for Democracy in UK

    23:48
The threat of terrorism first touched Arlene Foster’s life when she was just a child. Her father was serving as a police officer in the United Kingdom when he was shot in his own home by the Provisional Irish Republican Army in 1979.The Provisional Irish Republican Army group was seeking to end British rule in Northern Ireland. The U.K. designated it a terrorist organization. Law enforcement, according to Foster, was seen as opposition to the efforts of the paramilitary group. Foster’s father survived, but less than a decade later, when Foster was 17, the Provisional Irish Republican Army bombed a school bus she was on. Thankfully, Foster and everyone else on the bus survived the attack.Today, bearing the title of baroness and serving in the House of Lords, Foster says she chose to get involved in politics “to be a democratic voice for the union, for the United Kingdom.” “There’s always an alternative to terrorism,” she says. “There’s always an alternative to violence.” Fosters joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to not only share her story, but also how the U.K. weathered terrorism in Northern Ireland years ago and the need to stand against Hamas and other terrorist activity today. She also weighs in on the strategic relationship between the U.S. and the U.K. and why a free-trade agreement would strengthen those ties and benefit both nations. Enjoy the show!
