Federal Grand Jury Declines to Indict Letitia James on Mortgage Fraud Charges
A federal grand jury in Norfolk, Virginia, has decided not to indict New York Attorney General Letitia James on mortgage fraud charges. This decision comes after a federal judge dismissed the initial case against her ten days prior. The Justice Department attempted to refile the case, but prosecutors failed to persuade a majority of grand jurors to approve the charges. James had previously pleaded not guilty to the mortgage and bank fraud charges, which stemmed from allegations that she claimed to purchase a home as a secondary residence but allowed another family to rent it. The dismissal of the first case and a similar case involving former FBI Director James Comey was due to a ruling by a federal judge in South Carolina, who determined that the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Lindsey Halligan, had been unlawfully appointed. James had previously accused the president of weaponizing the justice system and forcing federal law enforcement to act on his behalf due to her offices investigations into former President Trump and the Trump Organization. These investigations, some dating back to 2019, included a civil trial in 2023 that resulted in a significant payment from Trump. The grand jurys recent decision effectively closes this chapter for Attorney General James.
