The Very Best of Pete Price

Episode 188a

Season 1, Ep. 188

In our latest podcast episode, we had the privilege of sitting down with two of the most influential leaders in the North West of England: Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, and Steve Rotheram, the Metro Mayor of Liverpool City Region. The conversation revolved around their new book, "Head North," which delves into the future of the region under a new Labour government.

"Head North" isn't just a book; it's a manifesto for change. Andy and Steve discuss how the North West has historically been treated as a second-class region by the British state. They argue that local decision-making and English devolution are crucial for the area's future development. "We are not accepting second class status for our residents," Andy passionately states, setting the tone for the rest of the discussion.

One of the key highlights of the episode is the discussion on public transport. Andy Burnham has been a vocal advocate for improving public transport in Greater Manchester, and Steve Rotherham is keen to implement similar changes in Liverpool. The new trains in Merseyside, despite initial teething problems, are a testament to their commitment to better infrastructure. "Local people making local decisions is the way forward," Steve asserts, emphasising the importance of local governance.

The episode also touches on the Hillsborough Law, a significant legal reform aimed at ensuring justice for victims of state failures. Both Andy and Steve have been instrumental in pushing for this law, which is now on the cusp of being included in the King's Speech. "The Hillsborough Law will change the British state fundamentally forever," Steve remarks, highlighting the law's far-reaching implications.

Housing and homelessness are other critical issues discussed in the episode. Both mayors stress the need for more council housing to address the housing crisis. Andy points out that Manchester is at real risk from this crisis and emphasises the importance of building affordable homes. "We need council housing that is run in an accountable way to local people," he says, advocating for a return to traditional council housing models.

Social media and its impact on politics also come under scrutiny. While acknowledging its potential for positive change, both mayors express concern over the negativity and misinformation that often proliferate on these platforms. "Social media is both a huge opportunity and, in some ways, the bane of our lives," Steve notes, summarising the double-edged sword that is social media.

As the episode wraps up, the conversation shifts to the broader picture, including global challenges like the situation in Ukraine and the rise of right-wing politics. Despite these challenges, both mayors remain optimistic about the future. "The British public often show real wisdom in these moments," Andy concludes, expressing hope that the new Labour government will bring about meaningful change.

This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the future of the North West, local governance, and the transformative power of political leadership. Tune in to hear Andy Burnham and Steve Rotheram share their vision for a brighter, more equitable future for the region.
