Ciara Mangan and Dylan Gallagher - Beyond Surviving Fundraiser

This morning Tommy Marren was joined in studio by creator and founder of the new survivor-led organisation 'Beyond Surviving' Ciara Mangan. Ciara discussed her own experience and how she has used and continues to use it to help others. Tommy and Ciara were also joined by Mayo man and sexual assault survivor Dylan Gallagher. Last Monday Dylan did a sky dive to raise money for Beyond Surviving. You can find the full interview here.

    This morning on the Tommy Marren Show, Mary Cattigan the aunt of 11 year old Shannon Lynch from Achill told her niece's story and a fundraising page that has been set up.On the 15th February 2025, a couple of weeks after her 11th birthday, Shannon took very ill at her home in Cashel, Achill Island and was rushed to Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar where it was quickly discovered that she had a substantial bleed on the right hand side of her brain. She was immediately rushed to Temple Street Children's Hospital in Dublin where the surgeon and his team were waiting to take her to theatre. After a lengthy operation, they eventually succeeded in stopping the bleed and Shannon spent 11 days in ICU recovering. She is continuing her recovery in St.Gabriels Ward in Temple Street at present.Shannon will have to undergo another operation in Beaumont Hospital on the 4th of April to remove the AVM on the brain that caused the bleed as there is a risk of another bleed especially within the year.   • Laura Mitchell - Turning Plastic Waste into Opportunity

    Laura Mitchell, a final-year Economics student at University College Dublin, is taking part in an upcoming volunteer project in Uganda.This June, she will be traveling to Masaka, Uganda, for four weeks to volunteer with EcoBrixs as part of the UCD Volunteering Overseas (UCDVO) program. EcoBrixs, a non-profit organisation established in 2017, is dedicated to addressing plastic waste by transforming it into sustainable building materials. In addition to tackling pollution, the organisation provides employment opportunities to over 3,000 local collectors, with 50% of its workforce comprising women and individuals with disabilities.During her time in Uganda, Laura will be working directly at the EcoBrixs upcycling center, contributing to the production of sustainable building materials such as their innovative plastic-sand composite pavers, which are stronger, lighter, and more durable than concrete. She will also be engaging with some of EcoBrixs’ 56 partner schools, educating students on local circular economies and recycling while promoting the "Plastic for Education" initiative.Volunteering abroad has been a long-held aspiration for Laura, inspired by stories from her grandmother at a young age. The opportunity to participate in this project is particularly meaningful to her. To support EcoBrixs and its mission, she has launched a GoFundMe campaign with a fundraising goal of €1,550, with all proceeds going directly to the organization.
