I've heard it said that everyone has a book in them. And I'd have to agree with that. With a little steak sauce, "Where's Waldo?" can taste just like "Gone With The Wind." (Not what that means? Um, never mind.) But what kind of writing talent does it take to turn a personal tragedy into not one, but a series of fantasy novels? We get to find that out today, when Christen Stovall joins us. She's able to use her literary inspirations to take her readers into a different world, filled with knights, dragons, faeries, and the "hob" type of goblin, so that's no ordinary goblin, Rebels! 44:06||Season 8, Ep. 8I pride myself in getting to do some pretty powerful interviews. Everyone loves a redemption story, and Joel's is a pretty great one. Perspective. That's the word that kept creeping up in my head for this interview. And for 2 reasons. Reason 1 was me. See, I'm normally a stickler for being on time for interviews. And what happened? The night of our interview, guess who forgot to show up? ME!! Fortunately, Joel was fine with us starting a little late (like 40 minutes!). And he was kind enough to show concern that I was okay, when I wasn't there on time. Reason 2 is more apparent. A guy like Joel who did drugs, drank heavily, and got involved in gangs, now looks back at his former life and the mistakes that came with it. But now he wants to keep others from making those mistakes that he was fortunate to live through, with the release of "The Book of Joel". But hearing this one all over was truly a treat!__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________So, do I now owe a "je suis désolé" to the Nation of France, after my awful Jerry Lewis impression? Maybe I can get a descendant of Dean Martin to cover for me. Getting to do this interview with Lisa was a fun experience. It isn't every day that a listener contacts me for an interview. It isn't every day I realize someone has been listening, either. I strongly recommend checking out "Slanted and Disenchanted", for a great story, and a ton of references, too. I remember when I wanted to start a rock band after high school. And strangely enough, no one wanted to perform metal covers of Bo Donaldson and The Heywoods. Well, Lisa might not have turned out to be the guitarist that Carla is (in the book), but at least she can pick a good playlist. Sadly, you don't get to hear Lisa's ET impression in the interview, but I got to. You know how I love impressions.
