Writer Interview - "Exalted" with Matt Bassford

Ep. 3

The lyrics to"Exalted" were written by Matt Bassford in 1999. In this conversation we discuss what motivated the writing of the hymn and the scripture references behind the words.

Exalted

Known before the world;

Seen in future days;

Glimpsed by righteous men:

Son of God.

Sent as David’s heir;

Named an ageless King;

Granted all the earth:

Exalted.

Seen with blinded eyes;

Heard by heedless ears;

Met with wicked hearts:

Son of God.

Worshiped with contempt;

Crowned with blood and thorns;

Throned upon a cross:

Exalted.

Scorned by those who watched;

Mocked by all the wise;

Loved within belief: (loved only by believers)

Son of God.

Born to take my death;

Slain to give me life:

Jesus, Son of God.

Exalted! Exalted!

    "My God, I Thank You, Who Have Made" was written by Adelaide Procter in 1858. This podcast takes a closer look at the words of this thought-provoking prayer of thanksgiving.Lyrics (slightly modified to modern English):My God, I thank You, who have madeThe earth so bright,So full of splendor and of joy,Beauty and light;So many glorious things are here,Noble and right.I thank You, too, that You have madeJoy to abound;So many gentle thoughts and deedsCircling us round,That in the darkest spot of earthSome love is found.I thank You more that all our joyIs touched with pain,That shadows fall on brightest hours,That thorns remain;So that earth’s bliss may be our guide,And not our chain.I thank You, Lord, that You have keptThe best in store;We have enough, yet not too muchTo long for more:A yearning for a deeper peaceNot known before.I thank You, Lord, that here our soulsThough amply blessed,Can never find, although they seekA perfect rest;Nor ever shall, until they leanOn Jesus’ breast.Music: Matthew Harber (2011)Recording: Josh McKinseyFor more recordings from Josh, see:https://soundcloud.com/joshamckhttps://www.instagram.com/asongformyselfFor the hymnal "Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs," which contains this hymn, see:https://truthbooks.com/phass-hymnalAll Scripture quotations are from the English Standard Version (ESV).www.thesacrificeofpraise.com
