Kit Tymoshuk, a Dalhousie University student, is reviving native kelp forests off Nova Scotia using art and conservation. Inspired by a method called green gravel, Kit invented special clay pots to anchor and grow baby kelp. After winning a grant from Ocean Wise, Kit foraged wild clay, mixed it with commercial clay, and designed the pots with textured surfaces and shapes inspired by nature. The pots were introduced to kelp spores in a tank, and after five weeks, tiny kelp sprouted.
