Elephant Tragedy: Train Collision Kills Seven in India
•
Seven wild Asiatic elephants perished, and a calf was injured, after a high-speed passenger train collided with their herd in Indias Assam state. The incident occurred early Saturday morning, highlighting the challenges wildlife faces with expanding human infrastructure. The train derailed, but no human casualties were reported. The elephants were autopsied and prepared for burial. The accident took place near Guwahati, not in a designated elephant corridor. The Rajdhani Express train, carrying 650 passengers, was involved. Passengers from derailed coaches were transferred to another train. Speeding trains hitting wild elephants is common in Assam, with at least a dozen elephants killed by trains since 2020.
