#4 In extreme environments, do women have physical competitive advantages? With Dr. Jack Kreindler in the expedition to Antarctica
It really often seems that’s it’s actually shitty to have a female body.
“Women are moody and bitchy”.
“Complicated”.
We’ve heard it over and over: we’re smaller, less fast, less strong, than men.
That’s what I thought, growing up, as a girl and then a woman.
But.
Is that true?
We do create the whole of humanity. Popped out of our bodies.
We are extremely endurant. Actually winning ultramarathon races against men: the longer, the better for us. Winning 10km swims.
And are our bodies more adaptable in extreme environments?
In this episode we speak with Jack Kreindler as he embarks in his research journey to Antarctica to understand more. Join his research challenge and participate in his research remotely.
-->
**Jacks invites you, and anyone you know, to join his team to contribute to the INSPIRE South Pole research expedition.
Try to move 70 miles in 10 days, that’s 15,000 steps a day, anywhere on Earth, as they ski the Last Degree in Antarctica to the South Pole.
5-15th Jan 2023. (Yes, there an extra day in there for bad weather!)
Record how your body and mind changes with an option to contribute your findings to academic research on exercise, metabolism and mental health. We’ve built a little app with UCL and Berkeley to record your thoughts and physical metrics! We’re doing it at 3000m unacclimatised in temperatures down to minus 40 degrees C pulling 50kg sleds. Luckily, you can choose to do your 7 miles or 15,000 steps a day however you want in whatever conditions you choose, but it would be great to have you come along for the ride.
It’ll be the first study ever done on all 7 continents at the same time and the worlds most remote trial!
Feel free to share this invite and here’s to a happy and healthy start to 2023**

14. #14 The BMI can’t tell us if we’re healthy. Here’s what we should use instead.
31:32||Ep. 14Having come across Dr. Jefferson Buchanan's article on Linkedin, host Helene Guillaume reached out to dig further into what's important for us to look at to quantify if we're "healthy".Lecturer in Human Movement Studies (Health and PE) Dr. Rachael Jefferson-Buchanan in the Charles Sturt University School of Education explores why it is still used despite its imperfections. It varies for everyone (ah, would be much easier if not! ;); but BMI was developed in 1832 by Belgian mathematician (not a doctor, nor a researcher in the field). It was based on European white men, and didn't take into account that a person's body fat also tends to vary depending on their sex, race, and ethnicity. There's a huge reliance on BMI to understand if the person is healthy; but if a person has a lot of muscle, they might be categorised as overweight.Follow Dr. Jefferson-Buchanan on her Facebook page or Twitter page.
