Osher Günsberg: Better Than Yesterday
498: Grace Tame isn't who the news tells you she is
How would you feel if your identity, who you felt as a person - was denied time and again. What if it was at a national level?
That’s what my guest today goes through on a daily basis - because there’s a narrative about her that isn’t really about her.
Luckily she’s a fierce person who will fight to be seen and heard for who she is.
However the way this happens to her tells us a lot about how we as a community in Australia see women, see survivors of child sexual abuse, and how little we hold our media to account.
Grace Tame is an Australian of the Year, author, and a voice that's shaking the foundations of our society.
She gained prominence for her advocacy and determination to overturn Tasmanian laws that prevented survivors from speaking out about their experiences through the Let Her Speak campaign.
Until April 6 2020 it was illegal for victims to identify themselves as the victim of such a crime. If they did speak about what happened two them, they could face six months in prison.
The law was probably brought in to protect people from being identified - however if those survivors chose to share their stories, it would be illegal to do so.
The forced anonymity that brings only reinforces the stigma and shame in our community around victims of such crimes.
Meanwhile these laws protected the people who committed these crimes.
The same laws that used the word “relationship” in relation to these crimes - the crime was to “Maintain a sexual relationship with a person under 17.”
You can clearly hear how that particular word changes how you think about what happened between the victim and the perpetrator.
In a world where conversations about consent and survivor support are more crucial than ever, Grace has been a driving force in raising awareness and demanding change.
Her courage and determination have paved the way for important discussions that challenge the status quo.
A status quo that does not like to be challenged.
The rancid stacks-on that she’s had to deal with as an adult is utterly shameful. The things she has had to endure for speaking out about her abuse is just too awful to behold.
And the things that happen to her have all been perpetrated by men. Entitled adult men.
Grace Tame is a powerful, brilliant person and I’m so glad you’re going to get a chance to engage with her today.

46:49When I moved to America, and over the following ten years of living there - to be without our public health system really opened my eyes to how much of an incredible asset that is to our country. That the standard of care that is available to those of us with the fewest resources was equivalent to the kind of care only the most wealthy people in the US could afford absolutely blew my mind. But a part of protecting our public health system is to make it as efficient as possible. To watch for wasteful spending, and to be sure that the best outcomes can happen for the most amount of people with the lowest cost. It’s not perfect by any stretch. Yet it’s still a superpower that we in Australia can be proud of. So how do you make things more efficient? How do we get better outcomes for people particularly when it comes to mental health? Thankfully my guest today is an expert in these matters. Professor Judith Gullifer is the Deputy Head of School and Senior Director of Education in the School of Psychological Science at Monash University, who are the sponsors of this episode. Drawing on her time spent as a psychologist in rural Australia, Judith now works to make sure that health care professionals entering the workforce are equipped with everything they need to help people in the best way possible. 01:17:21There’s a new film called ‘Uproar’ that comes out in Australia this week, it stars Julian Dennison, Minnie Driver and the exquisite Rhys Darby. Set around the 1981 springbok tour of NZ, it’s as hilarious as it is staggering in how powerfully it tells the story of a kid trying to figure out who they are, at the same time as a community trying to figure out who they are - and indeed the start of a whole country trying to figure out who they are. What is wonderful about this film is that it is based on a true story. The life story of the brilliant director Paul Middleditch. Paul has been on the show before - he’s the absolute genius behind the kind of commercials that you never ever forget, the brilliant series of ads for Australian Lamb the unforgettable commercials for Carlton Draught (including one which involved hundreds of extras charging across a field towards each other) and the hands-down classic Yellow Pages campaign with the immortal line “Not Happy Jan”. What makes this film even more unique is that while Paul is directing a film that he literally lived, the screenplay was written by his extraordinarily talented wife, the acclaimed writer and director Sonia Whiteman. Now as I mention in this episode - it’s rare that my wife and I can build something from Ikea without getting shitty with each other. And here is a couple who’ve been together for 23 years, with a beautiful family, managing to take an idea from inception to pitch to production - and they’re still together. The film is magnificent. I cried twice, Audrey cried about five times. But how these two work together and the way they speak about each other - that’s proper couple goals. I adore these two humans. I can’t wait for you to get to know them. 22:10Let’s go to 2014 to revisit my conversation with my first ever internet friend Camilla Wright. Camilla is the founder an editor of the internet’s longest-running, deepest-digging gossipmongers, Popbitch which has been in action since late 1999. Popbitch is easily, if not the very first internet pop culture gossip sites or gossip newsletters which set the standard of internet reporting from celebrity culture to pop culture in the new millennium. Camilla is a remarkable woman who left a career in serious political journalism covering Eastern Europe as it emerged from communism in the late 90s to start a weekly email about pop stars behaving badly.SPONSORS: Canstar - download the App here https://onelink.to/canstar-bty, then use the code BTY10, get a $10 gift card on registration.Tickets to upcoming Melbourne live shows available here: https://www.malthousetheatre.com.au/tickets/malthouse-outdoor-stage/osher-gunsberg-better-than-yesterday/Got suggestions for Better Than Yesterday? 01:13:57My guest today was the catalyst for fundamentally changing how consent education works in Australia. In 2021 Chanel posted on Instagram:“Have you or a close friend been sexually assaulted by someone who went to an all-boys school in Sydney?”Within 24 hours, 204 People had responded “yes” to the question, and then she had her first ever live TV interview 72 hours later.Over that weekend her friend started a website for Chanel, where she collected 6000 testimonies during the first three weeks. She started a petition demanding consent classes and 45,000 signatures later and exactly a year from the date she first posted on Instagram – after a lot of meetings and phone calls – the nine education ministers in Australia unanimously agreed and then publicly announced that they would mandate consent education.Chanel Contos is a force of nature.A fierce advocate for consent education and the brilliant brain behind the Teach Us Consent campaign. She's been instrumental in raising awareness about sexual assault and consent in Australia.Today we discuss the challenges of navigating relationships in the dating app era and explore the disturbing influence of pornography on our understanding of consent.Chanel highlights the need to extend empathy beyond our immediate circles, teaching both young men and women how they can prioritize their own desires – but most importantly, saying no when it matters most.Chanel has some valuable lessons to impart – not just about preventing sexual violence but also around creating a culture of respect and understanding. She strongly believes that showing young men that healthy, consensual relationships are something they should aspire to can ultimately help change the world. Her book, “Consent Laid Bare” is absolutely stunning. It’s out right now.SPONSORS: Canstar - download the App here https://onelink.to/canstar-bty, then use the code BTY10, get a $10 gift card on registration.Tickets to upcoming Melbourne live shows available here: https://www.malthousetheatre.com.au/tickets/malthouse-outdoor-stage/osher-gunsberg-better-than-yesterday/Got suggestions for Better Than Yesterday?
