The Motherhood Guide: Birth & Beyond

Understanding and confronting Postpartum PTSD and birth trauma with Emma McComish

Season 1, Ep. 21

This episode is an insightful and powerful conversation with Emma, who shares her challenging experience of developing PTSD following birth trauma. Emma discusses the lack of awareness and understanding surrounding postnatal PTSD compared to more commonly discussed postnatal issues such as depression and anxiety. She highlights the importance of raising awareness to help others recognize symptoms and support those who may be experiencing similar challenges. Emma's story delves into her recovery journey, including her initial diagnosis, the therapy process (particularly focusing on EMDR therapy), and the support system that helped her through her recovery. The episode aims to educate listeners on postnatal PTSD, offer hope to those facing similar struggles, and encourage open conversations about difficult aspects of motherhood and post-birth recovery.

About the Host

Hi, I’m Kelly - a mum of 2 and Hypnobirthing teacher and Birth Educator. My story starts with the premature birth of my little girl. I was shell shocked and felt disappointed in the care I had received during my labour, that left me with a less an ideal birth experience. I started motherhood feeling lonely, overwhelmed and without the slightest clue of how to make things feel better. When I fell pregnant for the second time, I knew I had to take back control. I practised Hypnobirthing and built my knowledge around birth, going on to have an incredible and powerful birth to my son. But something clicked for me. I knew I wanted to help other women build up their knowledge so they could have better experiences too. This led me to train to become a Hypnobirthing teacher, and I have been helping women with my 5* rated course, to feel more supported and have better birth experiences since 2021. Through this work, I’ve met other incredible experts in the Motherhood space and have began to build up a bank of knowledge on how we can make motherhood feel less chaotic and more happy and empowering. I’ve seen and felt the highs and lows of birth and motherhood and I don’t think anyone should go through the journey alone. So welcome, to ‘The Motherhood Guide: Birth and Beyond’, where I combine my knowledge and experience to help you feel seen, heard, reassured and supported.

  • 18. Navigating the UK Maternity System and why I chose to Freebirth with Mandy Millar

    01:00:40
In this episode I chat with Mandy Millar from Assertive Birth, who shares her very different birthing experiences with her 5 children, in which the latest was a freebirth. We also chat about the difficulties in navigating and birthing within the NHS system within the UK and how we can make sure we get the best out of the experience. Mandy also gives us some honest insight into life with 5 children. This is a really eye opening episode, and I really encourage you to listen to it even if you'd never plan a freebirth yourself! We talk about what the process of a c-section is like and highlight the significance of understanding and respecting birth preferences.
