The Rise of Large-Scale Immigration Detention Centers

The Trump administration is pushing a $45 billion expansion of mass immigration detention centers, converting large warehouses into facilities designed to hold thousands of people at a time. Proposed sites in Maryland, Arizona, and Texas include a planned El Paso facility that could detain up to 8,500 people, signaling a shift toward centralized, high-capacity detention. The American Civil Liberties Union warns that rapid expansion of large-scale detention has already led to documented abuse, medical neglect, extreme conditions, and deaths in ICE custody. As opposition grows, state and local officials across the country are moving to block or discourage new mass detention centers, citing serious human rights and constitutional concerns.
