A Christmas (Surprise) Carol: Muppets, Mathew McConaughey, Modern Psychology & The Man Who (Maybe) Invented Christmas
This year we accidentally made a very good choice of what to cover for our holiday episode. It began with wanting to discuss A Muppets Christmas Carol which then evolved into wanting to discuss the other adaptations and retellings of the Christmas classic which then led to a Dickensian feat. It’s going to include Madelaine Turner’s EXCELLENT research on Charles Dicken’s life and Rebecca’s subpar knowledge on the topic after watching The Man Who Invented Christmas (an eventual BBC classic). We also watched and will be discussing Ghosts of Girlfriends Past as *gasp* maybe the best adaptation of them all???t) We also watched A Barbie Christmas Carol, It’s A Wonderful Life, A Holly Dolly Christmas, Mickey’s Christmas Carol, Scrooged, to prep for the episode. That’s a lot. We are experts. God bless us, everyone!

Dune Pt.1
01:26:44|Dear Listeners, This is Rebecca writing the episode notes and I feel completely inept at writing Dune filled puns. That is what Maddie Daddie is for. Instead I'm just going to thank you from the depths of our souls for listening to our episode about Dune. Maddie has loved this movie from the beginning of our friendship and it has brought her so much comfort through the past few years. I always felt like Dune was Star Wars for A24 boys all grown up and I am not wrong. But it's also for Maddie. And you. If you want that. It still baffles me that I watched that whole damn movie and didn't pick up on anything that she explains to me in the first half of the episode. With all that said I think this episode will make you feel less alone and very giggly and I think you'll have a very fun time. Thanks for listening! Love you :)On Comparison
01:22:48|It's been a while since we've done one of these but this week we're bringing you a Topical Episode on Comparison. We approach it from some different angles and were honestly a little surprised how many ways you can discuss it. Madelaine Turner discussing the comparison she gets with Wes Anderson and Rebecca discusses what it's like working in a bridal shop and surrounded being surrounded by mirrors 24/7. Maddie talks about the Beyonce Concert, Rebecca was called vanilla by a boy at a bar the other night, and we even talk about how we're compared to one another. This is one of our most vulnerable episodes to date and we really appreciate you listening.ACOTAR Recap Pt. 2: A Court of Wings and Ruin
01:40:53|Y'all. This almost killed us. We possibly ACOTAR-ed too hard and tried to consume too much smut in too short of a timespan which made us lose our minds. We may have read the term 'mate' used too many times in one week. Or there was just way too much war and not enough smut. All that matters is that this week we learned more about ourselves and we're dragging you down to the bottom of the library with us. We will be covering the third book, took the ACOTAR personality quiz to find out which character we are, and saur much more. The Video Essays that Got Us Across the Finishing Line:I read A Court of Wings and Ruin and now I’m an alcoholic- With CindyCari Can Read Recap7. A Court Of Thorns And Roses by Sarah J. Maas
01:42:31||Season 2, Ep. 7Are you ready for The Most Beautiful Episode You've Ever Heard? By The Cauldron, we hope so. This week The Lonely Girls are flying head-first into a world of sexy faeries, seductive smirks, cursed castles, and more lore than either of them were truly prepared for. Recapping the first two novels of Sarah J. Maas's fantasy series, A Court Of Thorns And Roses (known colloquially as ACOTAR), Rebecca and Madelaine get into the nitty gritty of these best-selling books and ask themselves the important questions. Did we see the twist from a mile away? How many Ex Machinas will we accept in a row? Why does Rebecca hate a protagonist that paints? and Are we just a bunch of sluts? Listen and find out. Hope you enjoy!6. Uptown Girls
01:25:18||Season 2, Ep. 6*cue the Billy Joel song* *turn off Billy Joel song*This week we're talking about the 2003 cult classic film, Uptown Girls. This movie was marketed as a rom-com giggly sleepover romp and then ended up being a very delicate and beautiful film about healing our inner child. It is (arguably) one of the best Brittany Murphy performances and maybe THE best performance from a child actor ever. Ever. The movie was initially panned because it never found its exact audience but was held in the public consciousness because of Sarah Edward's costuming. The whimsical and girl-forward styling and art direction of the film has kept it as a very "online" and led it to be rediscovered in the 2020s. During this episode Madelaine and Rebecca refer to this AMAZING video multiple times:Uptown Girls is an Underrated Masterpiece on Healing Your Inner Child by Film Girls Studies. The Forgotten Legacy of Brittany Murphy by Yhara zayd.Makeover Montage Podcast- Uptown Girls with Tavi Gevinson5. Holes by Louis Sachar
01:34:49||Season 2, Ep. 5You asked for it (no one asked for it) and we delivered. This week we are talking about Louis Sachar's film and Newberry Medal winning book, Holes. It is a coming of age story about a boy sent away to a juvenile correction camp where he unearths (hell yeah) secrets and breaks family curses. It truly presents as a beautiful children's novel but one foot deeper is an elegant investigation into the prison system and generational trauma... Dig in. This episode was edited by Darcy Brown! We love you Darcy. The video essay referenced: Holes and the Industrial Prison Complex by Yhara ZaydActors Commentary of Holes4. New Moon & Eclipse
01:36:24||Season 2, Ep. 4Christmas Surprise. Back in November 2022 Madelaine and Rebecca were together to watch Bivi play Clara in The Nutcracker and they continued to watch the Twilight series. We truly love talking about these movies so much because they are EXCELLENT pieces of cinema. In this episode we discuss where the hell we've been, rolling down hills, the morality of becoming werewolves, and Howard Shore's score that was honestly too good for these movies. Thank you to Erica Kremer and Mary (hail Mary) for experiencing these films with us.3. The Princess Bride
01:40:02||Season 2, Ep. 3Being iconically nostalgic is what brings us together today. This current season has been a love letter to Madelaine's mom and this film has particular significance for both of them. In this episode we talk about being lonely girls at concerts (Rebecca discusses going to the Taylor Swift Eras Tour and Madelaine tells the story of her 24 hour whirlwind in NYC). To prep for this episode Rebecca did so much research that she may have made herself physically sick and she HIGHLY suggests you do the same. Below we're linking what we hyper fixated on to bring you this. The Princess Bride Audiobook (abridged) read by Rob ReinerAs You Wish by Cary Elwes (HIGHLY suggest listening to the audiobook)And then obviously the book and then the movie. We barely need to link these above.
