Trump Signs Executive Order Banning Gender-Affirming Surgeries for Minors
Former President Donald Trump has signed an executive order in 2025 aimed at restricting gender-affirming medical treatments for minors, a move he describes as necessary to "protect children from chemical and surgical mutilation."
The order effectively bans healthcare providers from performing gender-affirming surgeries or prescribing puberty blockers and hormone treatments to individuals under the age of 18. It also calls for penalties against medical professionals who violate these restrictions and encourages states to pass stricter legislation in line with the federal mandate.
In a statement from the White House, Trump said, “We will not allow our children to be subjected to irreversible procedures that they may come to regret. This order ensures that kids are protected from radical gender ideology and medical exploitation.”
The decision has sparked strong reactions from both sides of the political spectrum. Supporters of the order, including conservative advocacy groups and some parent organizations, argue that minors should not make life-altering medical decisions before adulthood. Critics, however, view it as an attack on transgender rights, warning that it will severely limit access to necessary healthcare and increase risks for transgender youth, including mental health struggles and suicidality.
LGBTQ+ advocacy groups have vowed to challenge the order in court, calling it a violation of healthcare rights and personal freedoms. "This is a dangerous overreach that takes critical medical decisions out of the hands of doctors, parents, and the individuals themselves," said a spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign.
The executive order aligns with a broader push by conservative lawmakers across several states to restrict gender-affirming care for minors. Legal experts predict that the order will face immediate lawsuits, potentially leading to a Supreme Court battle over transgender healthcare rights in the United States.
As debates over gender identity and medical ethics continue to divide the nation, the order marks a significant step in the ongoing political and cultural battle surrounding LGBTQ+ rights in America.
