Multiple Students Killed in Bangladesh Protests over Job Quotas
A series of student-led protests over government job quotas turned deadly in Bangladesh, with multiple students killed in clashes with security forces across the country. The demonstrations, which have gripped the nation for several days, are centered on demands for the elimination of quotas that favor certain groups in public sector employment.
Witnesses report that the most intense clashes occurred in the capital, Dhaka, where thousands of students from various universities took to the streets. Security forces used tear gas, rubber bullets, and, in some instances, live ammunition to disperse the crowds. Hospitals in Dhaka reported receiving several students with gunshot wounds.
The protests began as a peaceful movement, with students calling for the government to ensure merit-based employment opportunities. However, the situation escalated after negotiations between student leaders and government officials broke down. The government's refusal to meet the students' demands has been met with widespread condemnation from human rights organizations and civil society groups.
In a statement, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and urged for calm. She reiterated the government's position on maintaining the job quota system, arguing that it is necessary to ensure representation for historically marginalized communities.
Despite the Prime Minister's appeal, protests have spread to other major cities, including Chittagong, Rajshahi, and Sylhet. In these regions, students have blocked major highways, set vehicles on fire, and clashed with police, resulting in further casualties.
International reactions have been swift. The United Nations has called for an immediate investigation into the use of force by security personnel, while Amnesty International has condemned the crackdown on peaceful protestors, urging the Bangladeshi government to respect the right to peaceful assembly and expression.
