In a groundbreaking move, the International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor has requested arrest warrants for Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the head of Myanmar’s military regime, along with several top officials. This development comes amid allegations of crimes against humanity and genocide targeting the Rohingya Muslim minority and other ethnic groups.

The ICC investigation, initiated in 2019, has been examining widespread reports of systematic violence, including mass killings, forced displacement, and sexual violence. The latest request signals a significant escalation in international efforts to hold Myanmar’s military accountable for its actions since the 2017 crackdown in Rakhine State and subsequent abuses following the 2021 military coup.

In his statement, the ICC Prosecutor, Karim Khan, emphasized the urgent need for justice, citing overwhelming evidence of atrocities. “The Rohingya and other victims have waited far too long for accountability. It is imperative that those responsible face justice,” Khan said.
