    The U.S. government has introduced new shipping regulations aimed at Chinese retail giants Shein and Temu in an effort to address growing concerns over trade imbalances and the competitive impact these companies have on domestic businesses. The rules are designed to close loopholes in the shipping process that have allowed the Chinese e-commerce platforms to take advantage of lower shipping costs, undercutting U.S. retailers.Under the current system, Shein and Temu have been able to use a shipping method known as "Section 321," which allows goods valued under $800 to enter the U.S. without paying tariffs or undergoing rigorous customs scrutiny. This method has been widely criticized for giving foreign sellers an unfair advantage over U.S.-based companies. The new rules aim to limit this practice by implementing stricter requirements and increased oversight on low-value shipments.

    05:04||Season 1, Ep. 3986
    North Korea has released the first-ever photos of a uranium enrichment facility, showing leader Kim Jong Un touring it as he called for more centrifuges to boost his country’s nuclear weapons arsenal.Pyongyang, which is facing a slew of United Nations sanctions for pursuing its banned weapons programmes, has previously never publicly disclosed details of its uranium enrichment facility since its first nuclear test in 2006.Kim toured the Nuclear Weapons Institute and the “production base of weapon-grade nuclear materials,” the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Friday.The photos showed Kim walking between long rows of metal centrifuges but it did not say when he visited the location.Such facilities produce highly enriched uranium, which is needed to manufacture nuclear warheads, by spinning the material in centrifuges at high speeds.It was unclear where the facility is located, but North Korea is believed to operate multiple uranium enrichment facilities, including one at its Yongbyon nuclear site.During the visit, KCNA reported that the North Korean leader “stressed the need to further augment the number of centrifuges in order to exponentially increase the nuclear weapons for self-defence”.Reporting from the South Korean capital, Seoul, Al Jazeera’s Rob McBride said this was the first time that Pyongyang revealed in such detail the “inner workings of its uranium enrichment facility”.“This comes as North Korea continues its active development of its nuclear arms capabilities in spite of the international sanctions as well as objections from South Korea.

  • 3984. Virus and Outbreak: WHO approves MVA-BN as first prequalified vaccine against mpox

    02:20||Season 1, Ep. 3984
    The World Health Organisation (WHO) has approved the MVA-BN vaccine as the first vaccine against mpox to be added to its prequalification list.The prequalification approval is expected to facilitate timely and increased access to this vital product in communities with urgent needs, to reduce transmission and help contain the outbreak. WHO’s assessment for prequalification is based on information submitted by the manufacturer, Bavarian Nordic A/S, and review by the European Medicines Agency, the regulatory agency of record for this vaccine.“This first prequalification of a vaccine against mpox is an important step in our fight against the disease, both in the context of the current outbreaks in Africa and in future,” said WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “We now need urgent scale up in procurement, donations and rollout to ensure equitable access to vaccines where they are needed most, alongside other public health tools, to prevent infections, stop transmission and save lives.” The MVA-BN vaccine can be administered in people over 18 years of age as a 2-dose injection given 4 weeks apart. After prior cold storage, the vaccine can be kept at 2–8°C for up to 8 weeks.“The WHO prequalification of the MVA-BN vaccine will help accelerate ongoing procurement of the mpox vaccines by governments and international agencies such as Gavi and Unicef to help communities on the frontlines of the ongoing emergency in Africa and beyond,” said Dr Yukiko Nakatani, WHO Assistant Director-General for Access to Medicines and Health Products. “The decision can also help national regulatory authorities to fast-track approvals, ultimately increasing access to quality-assured mpox vaccine products.”The WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) on immunisation reviewed all evidence and recommended MVA-BN vaccine in the context of the mpox outbreak for persons at high risk of exposure. While MVA-BN is currently not licensed for persons under 18 years, this vaccine may be used “off-label” in infants, children and adolescents, and in pregnant and immune-compromised people. This means vaccine use is recommended in outbreak settings where the benefits of vaccination outweigh the potential risks.WHO also recommends single-dose use in supply-constrained outbreak situations. WHO emphasizes the need to collect further data on vaccine safety and effectiveness in these circumstances. Available data shows that a single-dose MVA-BN vaccine given before exposure has an estimated 76% effectiveness in protecting people against mpox, with the 2-dose schedule achieving an estimated 82% effectiveness. Vaccination after exposure is less effective than pre-exposure vaccination.
  • 3983. Sweden is asking migrants to go back. The incentive is $34000 per family

    02:50||Season 1, Ep. 3983
    Sweden is offering a hefty sum of US $34,000 per immigrant family to return to their home countries, one of the many tactics some Western nations are adopting to cut the number of asylum seekers.Sweden’s new policy, set to take effect in 2026, marks a substantial increase from the current grant of up to $970 per adult and $485 per child.During a press conference on September 12, Sweden’s migration Minister Johan Forssell described the new policy as a “paradigm shift” in the Nordic country which in 2015 opened its borders to 162,877 asylum seekers, mostly of Syrian, Afghan, and Iraqi descent as a “humanitarian superpower”.The grant system, implemented in 1984, was intended to provide financial incentives for immigrants to voluntarily return to their home countries, yet, only one person took the existing offer last year, according to Forssell.If more people were aware of the grant and its size was increased, more would likely accept the offer, Ludvig Aspling of the Sweden Democrats told reporters.After coming to power in 2022, Ulf Kristersson, the first prime minister in Swedish history to rely on the far-right Sweden Democrats for support, vowed to take a tougher stance on immigration and crime.Sweden’s move aligns with a broader trend seen in neighbouring countries, which have also tightened their migration policies significantly.
  • 3982. Apollo Quiboloy: Fugitive pastor arrested for sex crimes pleads not guilty in Philippine sex trafficking case

    05:10||Season 1, Ep. 3982
    Apollo Quiboloy, a self-proclaimed "Appointed Son of God" and ally of former president Rodrigo Duterte, surrendered last Sunday two weeks into a police search of his sect's sprawling compound in Davao City."Stand firm," the handcuffed preacher said to followers as police ushered him into the courtroom.Aged at least 74, he wore a black face mask, dark sunglasses, and a bullet-proof vest and helmet over an orange prison shirt.Quiboloy faces life in prison in the Philippines if found guilty of human trafficking in a case involving the alleged use of women and child sect members to sell goods and raise funds for his church.A US grand jury has separately indicted Quiboloy for conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking by force, fraud and coercion, sex trafficking of children, and bulk cash smuggling.The 2021 US indictment alleges women were recruited as personal assistants for Quiboloy to prepare his meals, clean his residence, give him massages, and have sex with him.Quiboloy's lawyer Israelito Torreon said he pleaded "not guilty" at the brief Manila court hearing, from which journalists were barred .Four other detained sect members also pleaded not guilty.Quiboloy and the others also pleaded not guilty via video conference on separate child abuse and sex abuse charges in a separate Manila court later Friday, his lawyer said.Following his arrest in Davao, police said more victims, including girls as young as 12, have come forward to allege sex crimes committed against them by the pastor.The young victims were told they were having sex with the "Spirit of God", and were threatened not to tell anyone on pain of being hunted down by "angels of death", Philippine police spokeswoman Colonel Jean Fajardo told reporters on Thursday.Quiboloy's Kingdom of Christ Church said on its website that members have "freedom of choice" and thus "anything that happens to you... is your own voluntary will or choice".The powerful sect claims millions of followers in the mainly Catholic Asian nation and owns a television network.Women and children advocate Senator Risa Hontiveros said in a statement Friday that Quiboloy must be held accountable."He and his co-accused have caused unspeakable pain to women, children, and the most vulnerable," she said.President Ferdinand Marcos said Monday the government was not yet looking to extradite the pastor to the United States, because "we are focusing on the cases filed in the Philippines".
  • 3981. Sports: Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag rejects Football Star Cristiano Ronaldo's criticism

    01:59||Season 1, Ep. 3981
    Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has dismissed Cristiano Ronaldo's latest criticism and says the outside noise around the club does not bother him.Speaking to former United team-mate Rio Ferdinand on a podcast, Ronaldo said Ten Hag had been wrong to say in a pre-season interview in the manager's home country of the Netherlands that the club were "a long way away" from winning the Premier League for the first time since 2013.Although Ronaldo went on to say he also thought his old club could not win the championship, he felt, as manager, Ten Hag was sending out the wrong message.Asked about the veteran forward's comments ahead of Saturday’s trip to Southampton, Ten Hag said Ronaldo had said the same thing."No, he said this, if you read the article very well," said Ten Hag."He is entitled to his opinion. It's OK. He is far away in Saudi, far away from Manchester."After successive defeats by Brighton and Liverpool, United head to Southampton knowing defeat will condemn them to their worst start since 1986-87, when Ron Atkinson was sacked and replaced by Sir Alex Ferguson.Ten Hag confirmed full-back Luke Shaw, who has not featured for his club this season despite making three appearances for England during Euro 2024, is still not available.Striker Rasmus Hojlund will also miss the game as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury sustained during the summer tour of the United States.New signing Manuel Ugarte is fit, although the £50.2m Uruguay midfielder only returned from international duty on Thursday.The two-week break since the Liverpool defeat has seen Ten Hag's future widely discussed.Many outside observers are convinced the 54-year-old will not survive the entire season as co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe starts to make his presence felt.Ten Hag, who returned home to take charge of old club FC Utrecht in a charity game earlier this week, said the outside "noise" does not bother him."It doesn't impact me," he said. "I know where we are in the process and what we have to do and where we are going."I have said before we are still in a transition period. We have to integrate a lot of young players in the team and still have to deal with injuries and bring players back into the team."Before anyone thinks about excuses, no, we have to win every game. I know that. The team knows that. It doesn't matter who is available."
