In a poignant turn of events, a 102-year-old American veteran, who dedicated his life to commemorating the bravery and sacrifice of his fellow soldiers, passed away while on his journey to France to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

James "Jim" Thompson, a retired sergeant who fought in the pivotal Normandy invasion of June 6, 1944, was aboard a flight to Paris when he suffered a sudden medical emergency. Despite the best efforts of onboard medical personnel and the flight crew, Thompson could not be revived.

Thompson had been a prominent figure in veterans' circles, regularly participating in commemorative events and sharing his firsthand experiences of the harrowing battle that marked a turning point in World War II. His dedication to keeping the memory of D-Day alive earned him numerous accolades over the years, including the French Legion of Honour.

Born in 1922, Thompson enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 20.
