On the evening of August 30, a lightning strike caused an unexpected shutdown at Armenia’s Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant. The lightning strike hit the plant’s electrical infrastructure, forcing an emergency halt to operations. This led to a temporary power outage in nearby regions but was swiftly restored.

Officials from Armenia’s Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure assured the public that the plant’s safety protocols worked as designed, and no radioactive material was released. Maintenance teams have been dispatched to assess the damage and restore normal operations. The plant is expected to be back online once all safety checks are completed.
