The Leafs Lab Ep. 12: McKenna is a Leaf, Free Agency Preview, and the Werenski Trade
The draft is over — and the Leafs walked away with the best player in it.
On this week's episode of The Leafs Lab Podcast, we start with a breakdown of the Leafs' draft class (1:50) before getting into everything Gavin McKenna — why this kid is the real deal, what makes him perfect for this market, and what the early top six could look like heading into free agency (6:57).
From there, we say goodbye to Brandon Carlo (27:10). Then it's straight into the free agency preview — centre targets including Pettersson, Hayton, and Jenner (30:12), before pivoting to the biggest trade conversation in Leafs Land right now: should the Leafs go all in on Zach Werenski, and what would it actually take to get him? (48:27)
We round things out with a look at the winger market — Marchment, Bjorkstrand, Arvidsson, and Tolvanen (57:50) — the defensive free agent options and what happens with Morgan Rielly (1:11:30) — and close with the goalie question nobody can agree on: do the Leafs go big on Sergei Bobrovsky? (1:17:49)
The offseason is just getting started. Let's get into it.

5. The Leafs Lab Ep. 18: Can the Leafs Survive Without Tanev?
01:01:16||Season 2, Ep. 5Chris Tanev is out—and the Toronto Maple Leafs have difficult questions to answer. On this week’s episode of The Leafs Lab Podcast, we examine what Tanev’s absence means now and for Toronto’s future. Who takes his toughest matchups and penalty-killing minutes? How should Jim Hiller adjust the pairings? And can an internal replacement do enough, or does Chayka need outside help? (1:27)Then, we unpack the Utah game: who stood out, both good and bad, and whether Toronto showed progress in its breakouts and defensive structure. (23:35) The bigger question: Why can’t the Leafs put together a full 60 minutes? From the blown 3–0 lead in Vegas to the Leafs struggles in the second period, we debate whether the problem is personnel, Hiller’s system, execution, or a revamped team that needs more time together. (41:47)Plus, we discuss Sergei Bobrovsky, Anthony Stolarz, and the value of goaltending. How does Toronto’s investment in net compare with Sunny Mehta’s view on goalie spending? Can teams become too focused on the numbers? (52:05)Who steps up? What needs to change? And how long can Toronto afford to wait?Let’s get into it.
4. The Leafs Lab Ep. 17: Hiller’s System Analysis, Top-Six Highs and Lows, and the PP1 Debate
01:19:09||Season 2, Ep. 4On this week’s episode of The Leafs Lab Podcast, Michael shares his system analysis after watching the Leafs in person on Saturday night. We break down Hiller’s offensive and defensive structures, who looks comfortable in the system, and who is struggling to find their fit. Plus, PP1’s movement and rotations, and whether the crowd sounds different inside the building than it does on the broadcast (2:35).Then, it’s Be-Leaf or Don’t Be-Leaf on Toronto’s first-week takeaways. We debate Jack Roslovic’s fit alongside Auston Matthews and Kirill Marchenko, why the McKenna–Tavares–Nylander line is struggling, and whether John Tavares’ early numbers warrant concern. Plus, Easton Cowan’s push for a bigger role and how reshuffling the top nine could bring better balance (26:48).We also examine the Rielly–Raddysh and McCabe–Tanev pairings and ask whether the Leafs are getting enough from their loaded first power-play unit. Could Gavin McKenna be the playmaker who brings all that shooting talent together? (48:40) Finally, we step into Chayka’s Shoes: Alexander Nikishin or Simon Edvinsson? We weigh fit, upside, and trade cost—and discuss what Toronto should be willing to give up for a potential cornerstone on defence (1:06:20).The first week has given us plenty to debate. Now it’s time to decide what we Be-Leaf. Let’s get into it.
3. The Leafs Lab Ep. 16: Marchenko Arrives, Chayka Takes His Swing, and Opening Night Takeaways
01:03:36||Season 2, Ep. 3On this week’s episode of The Leafs Lab Podcast, we break down the Kirill Marchenko trade (00:42) and what it tells us about John Chayka’s approach to building the Maple Leafs. Was this the right time to move Matthew Knies, and did Toronto turn his potential into a player better equipped to drive its top line?We dig into Marchenko’s speed, shot, and playmaking, why his game fits Jim Hiller’s system, and how he could open up more space for Auston Matthews. We also touch on the cost of including Emil Andrae in the deal and what Miles Wood could bring to the lineup. Then, we unpack the season opener against Montreal (34:52): an encouraging first look at Matthews and Marchenko together, defensive concerns on the second line, and the chemistry challenges facing a heavily revamped roster. Plus, Hiller’s push for pace, Marchenko on the first power-play unit, and Matthews and Rielly on the penalty kill.Chayka took his swing. Now we get to see what it changes. Let’s get into it.
The Leafs Lab Ep. 15: Dr. Josh Walt + Preseason Takeaways
01:14:51|This one's a little different — and a lot of fun.On this week's episode of The Leafs Lab Podcast, we're joined by Dr. Joshua Walt (@waltsportmed), Sports Medicine Fellow at U of T, who has experience working alongside the Leafs new Primary Sports Care Physician, Dr. David Lawrence. We cover how training and nutrition shift once the season starts, before diving into the season's biggest injury storylines: Chris Tanev returning at 37 from two concussions and a Grade 3 abdominal tear and Auston Matthews working back from a Grade 3 MCL tear. From there, we examine the hiring of Dr. Lawrence, what he brings as the team's lead physician, and the medical team he brings along with him. We then discuss Andy O'Brien’s hiring as VP of Sports Performance and his approach to player health and recovery, what Sergei Bobrovsky’s "biological age" actually means for his career longevity, before briefly touching on the unique surgical risks facing Max Domi as a Type 1 diabetic. In the second half, we shift to the ice, discussing the biggest takeaways from the Leafs first preseason game: Morgan Rielly not on the top pair, Matthews already hitting 35 km/h, and standout puck movement from Darren Raddysh and Emil Andrae. The science says this team might be different—and the preseason is starting to back it up. Let's get into it.You can find Dr. Walt and his work on Instagram: @waltsportmed and X/Twitter: @WALTSportsMed.Amendment from Dr. Walt: Regarding MCL re-injury risk, the risk is still present, but it is important to distinguish MCL injuries from ACL injuries. MCL re-injury or surgical failure risk is considerably lower because the MCL has a much better blood supply and healing capacity. However, even if the MCL itself heals well and the risk of surgical failure is low, Auston Matthews may still experience a period of elevated overall injury risk after returning to play.
The Leafs Lab Ep. 14: Summer Shakeups, Leafs Under Pressure, and Gavin McKenna Expectations
01:23:28|The summer brought shakeups. And The Leafs are under pressure. On this week’s episode of The Leafs Lab Podcast, we recap the summer’s biggest surprises, from the firings of Hayley Wickenheiser and Mark Leach to the hiring of Daniel Alfredsson (2:15), before turning our attention to the season ahead. From there, we count down our top five Leafs under the most pressure (23:00). We debate the expectations facing Gavin McKenna and Easton Cowan, what John Chayka and Mats Sundin need to deliver, and how much Morgan Rielly, John Tavares, and head coach Jim Hiller have to prove. Then it’s onto Sergei Bobrovsky, Matthew Knies, and the name at the top of both our lists: Auston Matthews. Who needs a bounce-back, who needs to take the next step, and whose season will define this team?We also dig deeper into expectations for McKenna (1:04:25) — less about goals and assists, more about what we want to see when he hits the ice — before closing with the best- and worst-case scenarios for the Leafs after 10 games (1:13:18).New faces. Big expectations. Let’s get into it.
13. The Leafs Lab Ep. 13: Breaking Down the Leafs' July 1 Shopping and Early 2026-27 Projections
01:41:43||Season 1, Ep. 13Free agency is in the books — and the Leafs made a lot of moves. Whether they made the right ones is a different conversationOn this week's episode of The Leafs Lab Podcast, we start with the Barrett Hayton offer sheet the Leafs didn't do — and why that might be the most frustrating decision of the entire offseason (1:15). From there, we share our early overall thoughts on what Chayka put together on July 1st and what it tells us about the direction of this franchise (6:30).Then we work through every signing and trade one by one. Troy Stecher re-signs (10:23), we get into Jack Roslovic — a move we're not thrilled about (14:35). Then the big one: Sergei Bobrovsky on three years at $7 million (24:50). From there it's Colton Sissons (36:37), Teddy Blueger (44:34), Brandon Duhaime (48:29), Nick Robertson is traded (53:20), and the best move of the day — the Nick Paul trade (54:39).We also get into the Zach Werenski deal that never happened and what it means for this team's defensive ceiling going forward (1:09:02), before taking a step back and breaking down Chayka's overall team-building philosophy and whether it's the right approach for a team trying to contend (1:14:00).We close things out projecting the 2026-27 lines as they currently stand (1:27:44) and sharing our season predictions and what still needs to get done before training camp (1:34:10).The floor is better. The ceiling is still a question. Let's get into it.
11. The Leafs Lab Ep. 11: Joseph Woll is Traded, Jim Hiller is Hired, and Darren Raddysh Comes Home
01:20:52||Season 1, Ep. 11This might be the most chaotic week of the offseason yet — and we have a lot to sort through. We start with the shocking Joseph Woll trade (1:15). We break down why the Leafs cashed in on his peak value now, what it says about their belief in Anthony Stolarz and Dennis Hildeby, and how it clears a path for Artur Akhtyamov. Plus, we dive into the return: why we're fascinated by the high-upside bet on the fiercely competitive Emil Andrae and how his puck-moving game brings a much needed element to the team's blue line. From there, we pivot to the bench and the official Jim Hiller hiring (25:10). We admit to our initial overreaction and explain how his progressive background with video tracking, his power-play success with Auston Matthews, and his stingy defensive structures in LA won us over. Then, we tackle the absolute blockbuster news of the morning: the Darren Raddysh sign-and-trade (54:40). We look at how bringing a top-pair defenseman home from Tampa makes all the sense in the world. We break down his elite puck skills, his absolute rocket of a power-play shot, and why a max-term megadeal is a risk the Leafs had to take.Let's get into it.
10. The Leafs Lab Ep. 10: Trading Morgan Rielly, Vincent Trocheck, and the Sean Durzi Rumour
01:32:26||Season 1, Ep. 10This might be the most chaotic week of the offseason yet — and we have a lot to sort through. We start with the coaching search (1:30), which continues to be one of the strangest processes we've ever tried to follow. Pavelski and Roy are the only confirmed names, everything else is speculation, and we get into our theory on why the Leafs went from Carle to Laviolette to Pavelski — and why we think Pavelski might actually be the right long-term fit for where this team is at.From there, we dig into the Morgan Rielly situation (22:00). We break down what a realistic trade could look like, including a Rielly-for-Jake DeBrusk scenario with Vancouver, why San Jose continues to be the most talked-about destination, and whether we'd be surprised if he's still a Leaf come September. We also take on two big swing trade targets — Dylan Larkin (36:40) and Vincent Trocheck (45:10) — and explain why one fits this team perfectly and the other might not be the right fit at all, despite all the smoke. Then there's Jordan's Sean Durzi trade rumour (55:27). We share the DM that got our attention, dig into why Utah might actually be ready to move on from him, what he'd bring to the Leafs, and what a realistic trade framework could look like.We close things out the only way we know how — by revisiting the Matthew Knies trade that was submitted at 3:01 PM, and just how perfectly it sums up the entire Brad Treliving era (1:10:25).Let's get into it.
