The Labyrinth - A Novella
The labyrinth - 6 The Thread
The Thread
I looked at the red point in the darkness of the palm.
It hummed. The same frequency that had passed through my wrist. But it was not the same. It was fuller now. A vibration that had found a home.
A thread.
The word came without my choosing it. Not a ribbon. A thread. Something longer. Something that continued beyond what I could see.
I looked at the darkness around the red point. The figure's palm. The fingers. The wrist. But the thread did not end at the palm. It went somewhere. Into the darkness that made the figure. Into the presence that had always been here.
I felt the pull. Not from the figure. From the thread itself. As if it wanted to be followed. As if it had been waiting for someone who would follow it.
The figure did not move. Did not offer. Did not resist.
It simply held what I needed to find.
I reached out. Toward the thread. A beginning.
My fingers touched the silk.
Cold. The same cold as before. But now I could feel it. Not just the temperature. The length of it. The thread extended backward from my touch, into the palm, into the darkness, into somewhere I could not see.
I did not pull.
I waited.
The thread hummed. The darkness held. The white sand stretched behind me, endless and patient.
And then the figure spoke.
Not in words. In movement.

1. The Labyrinth - 1 - I - The Movement - The Heat
02:36||Season 1, Ep. 1The LabyrinthIThe movementThe HeatWhen I woke, the sun sat high and there was only sand. The sand isn't golden. It is pale and ashy, like bone bleached by centuries of sun. White. Vast. Without edges. The heat rose from the earth like a heavy breath, pressing against my bare soles. I stood. Small. The only dark in all that white. The silence isn't empty. It listens. The whole landscape is listening.A single red ribbon lay paces away, half-buried in the dust. Everything else too bright to look at; the ribbon the only place to rest.I stepped forward, the dust rippling like a muscle beneath my feet. My fingers touched the silk—cold, colder than the bone-white air. I pulled it from the sand and a low vibration hummed through my wrist. In the distance—or perhaps not distance, but simply elsewhere—a single wooden column stood against the white. My eyes closed. Opened. The column had become a doorway. No walls. Just two black posts and the dark space between.Within: a presence cut out of the light.I did not move. It did not move. The silence between us filled. As something spoken in a language long forgotten. The ribbon colder still. The vibration in my wrist stopped.I took a step forward. The figure did not step back. I took another. The shadow did not waver. The hand lifted. Slow. The palm turned, empty.I stopped. The hand lowered.Simply there. Has always been. Will always be.I did not know what it wanted. I did not know what I wanted. But I knew I was seen.
2. The labyrinth - 2 The Silence
03:46||Season 1, Ep. 2The SilenceThe silence received what I was.Not who I was. What I was. The small dark shape against the white. The silence took it in the way the heat pressed against my soles—without choice, without direction. Just contact. The figure's hand still hung at its side. The palm that had turned toward me now faced inward, toward the darkness it was made of.I tried to speak.Nothing came. Not silence—something more active than silence. A thickness in the throat that wasn't physical. As if the silence had entered me and now occupied the place where words would form. The figure watched. Not with eyes—I couldn't see eyes. With the whole of itself. The way the landscape listened.I was being received.I did not know what was being received. Perhaps I was blank as the sand, and the figure was finding only the same white emptiness it had always faced. Then something shifted. Not in the figure. In the air between us. The silence that had filled the space began to move. Not like wind. Like current. Like the vibration that had hummed through my wrist. The ribbon.I looked down.My hand was empty. The ribbon was gone. Not dropped. Not buried again. Simply not there. As if it had never been in my hand. As if the cold and the hum had been dreams of touching something that existed only in the moment of touching. But the current in the air remained.I looked up.The figure had not moved. The darkness that made it stood in the same position. The hand still turned inward. But the current flowed toward it. Toward the doorway. Toward the space between the posts where the presence waited.I was not being pulled. I was being invited. Not by the figure. By the air itself. The silence that listened had become the silence that called.I did not decide to step forward. The step happened. My foot met the sand and the sand did not ripple. It received me the way the silence had received me. Without resistance. Without welcome.Another step. Another. The doorway did not grow larger. The figure did not grow closer. But the current around me thickened. Warm now instead of cold. The vibration no longer in my wrist but in my chest. In the place where my breath used to be before the silence filled it.I stood at the threshold. The darkness inside the frame was not empty. It was full of something I could not see. Something that pressed against the edges of the frame like water behind glass. The figure's hand lifted again. This time the palm faced me.Not empty. In the centre of the darkness that made the palm, a point of red. Small. Humming. The ribbon.
3. The Labyrinth - 3 The Threshold
02:28||Season 1, Ep. 3The ThresholdI stood at the threshold. The figure stood within. The darkness that made it was not like the darkness of the doorway behind it. The doorway was absence. The figure was presence. Dense. Specific. It had edges I could almost see.I looked for a face. There was no face. But there was a front. A direction it faced. As if the darkness had gathered itself toward me. Not aggressively. Attentively. The way the silence had listened.I tried to see past the surface. Past the black. Into whatever was underneath.I couldn't.The darkness didn't have depth. It didn't have layers I could penetrate. It was solid in a way that wasn't physical. Solid the way a question is solid when it has no answer. The figure did not move. Did not speak. But something shifted in the quality of its stillness. As if it were waiting for me to do something. Not step forward. Not speak. Something else. Something I didn't have a word for.I felt the urge to reach out. To touch the darkness. To see if my hand would disappear into it or stop at the surface.I didn't move. The urge was not mine. It was being suggested. The way the silence had suggested a language. The way the current had suggested movement. The figure was not commanding. It was offering. An invitation to contact. The ribbon hummed in its palm. A low sound. The same frequency that had hummed through my wrist.I looked at the red point. Small. Bright. The only colour in the darkness. Then I looked at the darkness around it.And the darkness looked back. With attention. Concentrated. Focused. Directed entirely at me.I was no longer being seen. I was being known.
4. The Labyrinth - 4 Relief
02:32||Season 1, Ep. 4ReliefThe aloneness was not empty. It was full. Full of the listening. Full of the white that stretched in all directions. Full of the heat that rose and the silence that waited.I was the silence. Not part of it. I was it. The listening that had no listener. The attention that had no object. I had been here before the sand. Before the sun. I would be here after. The darkness that holds the space between things. Then it came.A small shape. Dark against the white. Moving. Feeling. The dust rippling beneath it like something alive.I watched. With the whole of what I am. The way the silence watches everything. It touched the ribbon.I felt that. The cold of the silk. The hum of the vibration. Felt it as if the fingers were mine. As if for a moment the shape and I were not separate. It saw the doorway.I did not make the doorway. I became it. The two posts were the edges of my attention. The dark between them was the centre of what I am.It stepped toward me.Each step a small movement in the silence. Each step changing nothing and everything. It stopped at the threshold. And looked. Not at the doorway. At me.The relief was not what I expected. But when its attention reached into the darkness—when it tried to see past the surface, past the black—I was no longer only the one who sees.I was the one being seen. The aloneness did not end. But it changed. It became aloneness that has been witnessed. Emptiness that has been acknowledged. Darkness that someone looked into and did not turn away.I had not known I needed this. But when it came, I recognized it.The way water recognizes the channel it has been waiting for.
5. The Labyrinth - 5 The Ribbon
02:00||Season 1, Ep. 5The RibbonCold. That's what I am. Cold in a place that has no cold. Cold when the heat presses up from the earth. Cold when fingers touch me. Cold even in the darkness that holds me now.I was not made for this place.I remember something else. Not a place. A quality. Movement. Air that moved through me, not around me. Hands that tied me. A purpose I no longer have. Now I lie in sand. Then I lie in a palm. Then I am nowhere. Then I am here. The humming is not mine. It comes through me. Like the cold comes through me. Like the colour. I am red but I did not choose red. I am silk but I did not weave myself.I am a channel. The small dark shape touched me and something passed. Not from me to it. Through me. A vibration that was not mine found its way from the sand to the wrist to the pulse. The darkness that holds me now is different from the sand. The sand buried me. The darkness carries me. Held up. A point of red in the black. The humming has changed. It is no longer just passing through. It is gathering. Building. As if the vibration has found a place to stay. The two presences are close now. I can feel them both. The small dark shape at the threshold. The darkness that is my holder. The space between them is thin.I am what will cross it.
7. The Labyrinth - 7 - II - The Reaching - Hands
02:28||Season 1, Ep. 7IIThe ReachingHandsThe hand had turned. The palm had opened. But the thread did not fall. It rose.It lifted from the darkness of the palm like smoke from a fire that had no heat. The red point ascended, and as it rose, it pulled the thread with it. Not unravelling upward. Extending. As if the thread had no fixed length. As if it could go on forever.I watched it rise above the doorway. Above the two black posts. Into the white that had no edge. The figure did not look up. It kept its attention on me. The darkness of its front still facing me. Still listening. The thread hung now between us. Not in the palm anymore. Suspended in the air. A red line connecting nothing to nothing. Or connecting everything to everything.I did not understand what I was seeing. But I felt it.The same feeling I had when the silence filled. When the landscape listened. When I knew I was seen. A recognition that came before understanding. A knowing that lived in the body before it reached the mind. The thread was not just silk. It was not just colour. It was a record. Of every touch it had received. Every hand that had held it. Every pulse that had passed through.I could feel my own touch in it. The moment in the sand when my fingers closed around the cold. That moment was still there. Still humming. And before that. Other touches. Other hands. Other pulses. A history I had not been part of.The figure watched me receive this.It did not explain. It did not offer. It simply let me feel what the thread was.And I understood something I could not have learned any other way.I was not the first.
8. The Labyrinth - 8 Them
05:46||Season 1, Ep. 8ThemWho were they? The figure did not answer. It stood as it had always stood, a dense column of attention. But the stillness between us was no longer patient. It was taut. Heavy. The need inside me—the desperate urge to hold something solid—pressed against the silence.I took the final step.My toes touched the very edge of the threshold, right where the bone-white sand met the absolute blackness of the doorway. The figure did not move back.We were close enough now that the heat from the desert behind me met the cold radiating from its chest. The boundary between us wasn't a distance anymore; it was a seam.Slowly, the figure lifted both its hands. It didn't offer the thread this time. It reached toward my face.I did not flinch. The fear had burned out long ago, replaced by a hollow, aching curiosity. I watched the black, faceless surface of its head descend toward mine. Its hands did not touch my skin. They hovered an inch away, framing my jaw, cupping the air around my cheeks. The cold from its palms sank into my bones, a freezing ache that felt sharper and more real than the burning sun above. And then, it pressed its forehead against mine. There was no bone. There was no flesh. It was like pressing my face into a wall of frozen wind, into a well of pure, concentrated gravity. The shock of it tore through my throat. In that contact, the silence didn't just fill—it shattered. I didn't see its face, but I felt its architecture. I felt the immense, terrifying weight of its loneliness. It was an ancient, structural solitude that had held this doorway open for centuries, waiting for dark shapes to wake up in the white sand.It wasn't just watching me. It was anchoring itself to me.Through the point where our foreheads met, a pulse rushed forward. It wasn't my memory, and it wasn't the figure's memory. It was an opening. The figure's grip on the air around me tightened. And it spoke. One word."Listen."The darkness inside the doorway began to stir. The solid black surface cracked open, and from the depths of the frame, the first breath of a labyrinth reached us. Not a wind, but a collective sigh. A thousand throats catching their breath at once.Whispers.The whispers came. Not one at a time. All at once. A wave of sound that had no single source. It poured through the cracked darkness like water through a broken dam.I did not try to understand the words. There were no words. Not yet. Just sound. Just the vibration of voices that had been waiting in the dark for so long they had forgotten they were voices. They had become pure breath. Pure need to be heard. The thread pulsed against my wrists. And I felt them.As sensation. As the weight of other bodies pressing against the silk before I arrived. The thread remembered every touch. Every grip. Every hand that had reached for it in the white sand. They were here. In the thread. In the whispers. In the red line that bound me to the figure at the threshold.Every whisper that passed through added a layer. A voice. A life that had touched the red silk and left something behind. The figure's forehead was still pressed to mine. Its cold had become familiar. Its gravity had become something I could lean against. And through it, through the contact, the whispers found a path. They entered me. Not as possession. As recognition. They passed through me the way the thread passed through the dark. Leaving traces. Changing what I was made of.I was becoming the labyrinth. Not entering it. Becoming it.The thread was not a path I walked. It was a path I became. The collective sigh flattened, settling into the dark space between us like dust settling after a collapse. The thousand throats grew quiet, holding their breath again, waiting. The whispers began to take shape. Not words yet. But closer. Sounds that wanted to be language. Breath that wanted to mean something. And then, a single voice parted from the silence.Trying to reach out.Through me.
9. The Labyrinth - 9 The Voice
04:01||Season 1, Ep. 9The VoiceDamp. That was what I felt first. The air heavy with water. The stone slick beneath my fingers. The fire crackled behind me, but its heat could not reach this deep into the rock. The cold seeped through my skin and settled in my bones.I could smell the earth. The red ochre crushed in my palm. The charcoal ground to powder. The animal fat I mixed it with, warm from the fire, cooling fast as I worked. My hands were stained. They had been stained for days. The colour would not wash out. It had sunk into the cracks of my skin, into the lines of my palms. I did not mind. The colour felt like it belonged there. The others had gone to sleep. Their breathing rose and fell in the darkness behind me. The sound was familiar. I had heard it every night of my life. But tonight it sounded far away. As if they were in another place entirely.I turned back to the wall.Something was there.I could not see it. But I could feel it. Pressing against the inside of the stone. Pressing to come out. The way a hand presses against the surface of a frozen river, wanting to break through.I did not know what it was.I only knew I had to let it out.My fingers moved. Not my decision. The brush touched stone. The red met the wall. A line appeared. Then another. Not shapes I recognized. Not anything I had seen in the world outside. The shape took form beneath my hand.An animal.I was not making it. It was making itself. I was the hand that moved. The brush that touched. But the image came from somewhere else. From behind the stone. From the cold that pressed against my back.My arm ached. My fingers cramped. I did not stop. The bison ran. The horse leapt. The deer turned its head and looked at me with eyes that were not eyes. They were holes in the rock. Holes that went somewhere else. Somewhere I could not follow. The fire behind me died down. The cave grew darker. But I could still see the images. They glowed. Faintly. From inside. As if the stone itself had become a membrane. Something on the other side shining through.I stepped back.My breath came fast. Sweat ran down my chest. The cold air hit my skin and I shivered. The images stayed. They did not fade. They did not become just paint on rock. They remained alive. Watching. Waiting.I looked at my hands. Red. Black. Streaked with colour that would not come off.I looked at the wall. At the things I had released.I did not know what to call them. I did not know what to call what had happened to me.I only knew that I could not go back to the others and sleep. I could not wake in the morning and hunt and eat and joke and be what I had been before.Something had passed through me.And it had left me on the other side of something I could not name.
