Fog drenched Edwin and Nora Wells's cabin, casting it in a foreboding twilight that threatened to swallow their small piece of heaven. The forest surrounding the silent home was absent of bird calls, the sound of lapping waves, and the croak of pond frogs. In the eerie silence that entrenched the land, only one sound could be heard—the haunting, echoing cry of a child.  “Mama! Papa! Help!” the cry burrowed through the pine walls of the cabin, pleading and wailing in the voice of Nora and Edwin's young son, Eddy. Eddy’s plaintive voice was followed by the raucous echo of another boy, Conner. “Momma! Papa! Help!”  came Conner's voice, taunting and teasing Eddy's parents. No, not a boy, a thing, a thing of towering limbs and snarling teeth, a thing not of this earth, and that thing.  Ding. Ding. Ding. The emergency bell rang through the small town, cutting through thin walls and cloth tents, pulling the people of Murkwood from the comfort of their homes. “The creek is gone! Don’t panic. Everyone, go to the town square! The mayor has called for a town hall!” came a man's voice, his words carried down the line by the next person and the next, fast as a wildfire.  While the creek burbled and sludged like the dregs at the bottom of a coffee cup, word of its sudden disappearance made its way back to Vera’s ears, where she and the others stood on the shoreline. Gayla Austin woke up with a hankering for some biscuits and gravy and a deep burning desire to have a bath right about then, or else her neither bits might light themselves a fire. She was a fair lady with dark hair and eyes that were just a tad too big for her face. Her disposition was often rough, but then again, a lady in her position had to be rough to make it in the West, and she’d learned from experience just exactly how true that was. 

In the mountainous outskirts of Murkwood, rides a lone man in a wagon. Only, he's not as alone as he thinks. There's something out there in the woods, something lurking, something waiting.
