    31:31|
On this week's episode of The Political Cycle, Rohan Venkat, Emily Tamkin and Tom Hamilton gather to take a 'vibes check' on their respective nations. Are the narratives emerging – that Kamala Harris has blown it, that Narendra Modi is in crisis, that Keir Starmer is another lame duck PM – matching reality? We also touch base with the results of the Haraya assembly elections and look at where they fit into the picture, as well as polling oscillations in the US, and staffing nightmares in Downing Street. You can now subscribe to the PREMIUM version of The Political Cycle on Hubwave: tricycle.hubwave.netHere are the Trike Recommendations from this episode:https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/09/us/politics/trump-harris-pennsylvania-battleground.htmlhttps://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/boris-johnson-memoir-unleashed-amber-rudd-b2624316.htmlhttps://newrepublic.com/article/186695/joe-biden-chose-gaza-catastrophic-pathSubscribe below to our contributors' Substacks:ET Write Home by Emily Tamkin (via Emily's Substack you can also listen to the PREMIUM version of the show)India Inside Out by Rohan VenkatDividing Lines by Tom HamiltonThe Political Tricycle is a Podot podcast. It's presented by Emily Tamkin, Tom Hamilton and Rohan Venkat.Executive Producer: Nick Hilton. For sales and advertising, email nick@podotpods.comTo watch a video version of the show, go to COOLER.NEWS
  • America's Foreign Policy Stalemate: how is war in the Middle East impacting the election cycle?

    29:24|
In an historic week for relations in the Middle-East, which saw Israel launch a ground invasion of Lebanon and Iran fire hundreds of missile towards the Israeli capital, The Political Cyclists gather to discuss the impact that war in the region is having on the American election. The US is widely seen as the most influential foreign policy actor in this conflict (outside of the immediate protagonists) and so the Harris vs Trump contest has taken on added importance. Emily Tamkin reports back from a fraught DC, while Rohan Venkat and Tom Hamilton probe the international perspective. You can now subscribe to the PREMIUM version of The Political Cycle on Hubwave: tricycle.hubwave.netHere are the Trike Recommendations from this episode:https://www.foreignaffairs.com/united-states/antony-blinken-americas-strategy-renewal-leadership-new-worldhttps://jcpa.org/survey-among-american-jews-over-51-support-for-bidens-decision-to-withhold-arms-shipments-to-israel/https://x.com/mattmfm/status/1841320867260780721?s=46&t=jJ5eM-RWyqDVjmNWjWq6jAhttps://x.com/DavidWright_7/status/1841334476904743325https://www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/article/reeves-may-regret-her-faith-in-bidenomics-7c2dhr5qxhttps://www.washingtonpost.com/style/media/2024/10/01/ta-nehisi-coates-tony-dokoupil-cbs-israel-palestinians/Subscribe below to our contributors' Substacks:ET Write Home by Emily Tamkin (via Emily's Substack you can also listen to the PREMIUM version of the show)India Inside Out by Rohan VenkatDividing Lines by Tom HamiltonThe Political Tricycle is a Podot podcast. It's presented by Emily Tamkin, Tom Hamilton and Rohan Venkat.Executive Producer: Nick Hilton. For sales and advertising, email nick@podotpods.comTo watch a video version of the show, go to COOLER.NEWS
  • Sri Lanka's Realignment: has AKD changed the political power balance of South Asia?

    31:14|
This week we're turning our attention (with Tom off to Liverpool for the Labour party's first conference in power) to Sri Lanka. Raisa Wickrematunge, deputy editor of Himal Southasian magazine, joins Rohan and Emily to discuss this month's election and how Anura Kumara Dissanayake (aka AKD) has re-aligned Sir Lanka's political compass. What has happened to the United National Party and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party to allow this outsider to romp home? And what should global politics watchers make of his party, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, whose symbol is a hammer and sickle? For this, and more, hop on the Political Cycle as we take a trip to South Asia. You can now subscribe to the PREMIUM version of The Political Cycle on Hubwave: tricycle.hubwave.netHere are the Trike Recommendations from this episode:https://forward.com/opinion/655944/mark-robinson-dropping-out-north-carolina/https://scroll.in/article/1073452/modi-leads-adani-follows-is-indias-diplomacy-in-lockstep-with-a-private-firms-global-expansionhttps://www.himalmag.com/politics/president-election-2024-jvp-npp-unp-sjb-wickremesinghe-rajapaksa-dissanayakehttps://www.himalmag.com/politics/sri-lanka-ranil-wickremesinghe-mahinda-gotabaya-rajapaksa-politics-economy-crisis-2024-electionSubscribe below to our contributors' Substacks:ET Write Home by Emily Tamkin (via Emily's Substack you can also listen to the PREMIUM version of the show)India Inside Out by Rohan VenkatDividing Lines by Tom HamiltonThe Political Tricycle is a Podot podcast. It's presented by Emily Tamkin, Tom Hamilton and Rohan Venkat.Executive Producer: Nick Hilton. For sales and advertising, email nick@podotpods.comTo watch a video version of the show, go to COOLER.NEWS
  • Pet Hate: why is Donald Trump stirring up more anger against immigrants?

    26:04|
Last week, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump took to the stage for the first – and, increasingly likely, the only – Presidential debate. In it, Trump propounded a conspiracy theory about Haitian migrants eating the pets of residents in Springfield, Ohio. What was going on there? And why does the Trump campaign want to keep talking about immigration in this campaign? Emily Tamkin gives the full debate low-down, while Tom Hamilton and Rohan Venkat look at the similarities across Europe and Asia. You can now subscribe to the PREMIUM version of The Political Cycle on Hubwave: tricycle.hubwave.netHere are the Trike Recommendations from this episode:https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/sep/17/charlotte-owen-sexist-gossip-lords-journalistshttps://goodauthority.org/news/misinformation-ohio-cat-rumors-targets-minorities-haiti-india-pakistan/https://www.dispatch.com/story/news/2024/09/14/haitian-springfield-residents-say-they-dont-feel-safe/75228724007/https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2024/09/14/trump-immigrants-haitian-venezuelan-springfield-aurora/https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/01402382.2024.2396775#abstractSubscribe below to our contributors' Substacks:ET Write Home by Emily Tamkin (via Emily's Substack you can also listen to the PREMIUM version of the show)India Inside Out by Rohan VenkatDividing Lines by Tom HamiltonThe Political Tricycle is a Podot podcast. It's presented by Emily Tamkin, Tom Hamilton and Rohan Venkat.Executive Producer: Nick Hilton. For sales and advertising, email nick@podotpods.comTo watch a video version of the show, go to COOLER.NEWS
  • Barn(ier) Raising: what does the elevation of Michel Barnier mean for French politics?

    33:33|
On today's episode of The Political Cycle, with Emily Tamkin away and American politics on hold until last night's debate (more on that next week), we've decided to peddle over to France where Emmanuel Macron has named Michel Barnier as his new Prime Minister. Barnier is well known to British audiences as the EU's chief negotiator on Brexit, but what does his appointment as PM mean for the political instability in France? To discuss this, Rohan Venkat and Tom Hamilton are joined from Washington DC by Tara Varma, Visiting Fellow at The Brookings Institution. You can now subscribe to the PREMIUM version of The Political Cycle on Hubwave: tricycle.hubwave.netHere are the Trike Recommendations from this episode:https://ip-quarterly.com/en/european-plan-trump-and-harrishttps://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/article/2024/sep/08/keir-starmer-michel-barnier-brexit-eu-ukhttps://indianexpress.com/article/express-exclusive/faulty-selection-lack-of-skills-showpiece-israeli-job-scheme-for-indians-begins-to-unravel-9559073/#google_vignetteSubscribe below to our contributors' Substacks:ET Write Home by Emily Tamkin (via Emily's Substack you can also listen to the PREMIUM version of the show)India Inside Out by Rohan VenkatDividing Lines by Tom HamiltonThe Political Tricycle is a Podot podcast. It's presented by Emily Tamkin, Tom Hamilton and Rohan Venkat.Executive Producer: Nick Hilton. For sales and advertising, email nick@podotpods.comTo watch a video version of the show, go to COOLER.NEWS
  • Deutschland's Dilemma: is there a way to stop the far-right in Germany?

    29:20|
This week, for the first time since the Second World War, elections in Germany provided significant victories for the far-right. In Thuringia, candidate Björn Höcke of the AfD (Alternative für Deutschland) hailed an "historic victory". But what does this mean for German and European politics? And what broader trends might we look at in terms of increasing far-right success at the ballot box? To discuss this – and with Tom Hamilton on holiday – the Cyclists are joined from Berlin by Rachel Rizzo, Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council.
