  • 17. Like Culture

    01:08:26
This months DCK effect is Like Culture. We talk through the evolution of the like button, the dawn of influencer culture and the pressures today to be a 'brand'. How have we coped in this new age where our self worth is quantified by the numbers on our social media account? Removing ourselves from these apps may benefit our self perception and wellbeing, but is that really an option? The world is now so reliant on social apps that it may not be possible to exit the influence. But can we be more responsible and humane in how we use them? This episode we explore our feelings and experiences with like culture. It's ok to want to be liked, but don't judge your self worth on a number from strangers. Be your authentic self and have fun with it. Join us on our quest to change our society by really thinking about the world around us. • 16. Grief & Bereavement

    01:02:28
Considering that death is the one sure thing in life, our society is pretty rubbish at talking about it, and it's terrible at supporting the bereaved. This episode looks at why people are so uncomfortable talking about death, dying, and bereavement. We look at death culture through the ages (and a little about different cultures), the five stages of grief and why it may not always be helpful to grievers. We give examples of dickish things that have been said and offer suggestions for kinder alternatives. And just a message if you are grieving, you aren't doing it wrong. Although grief is universal, each bereavement is completely unique.Join us on our quest to change our society by really thinking about the normalised language we use each day!Instagram: @thedckeffectEmail: thedickeffect@gmail.comTikTok: @thedckeffectYou can check out Megan's Sibling Loss account: @sibling.loss -A big thanks to those who shared the dick things that have been said to them. xAnd remember, we can all be dicks sometimes!Resources and reading from this episode:Book by Brandy Schillace Death's Summer Coat: What the History of Death and Dying Can Tell Us About Life and LivingBook by Elisabeth Kübler-RossOn Death and DyingArticles12 Funeral Traditions from Around the WorldDo you have a dick phrase that gets on your nerves?
