The Playoff Race Is On & Mission 200

Ep. 200

The conversation on the pod has shifted fully from trade talk to discussion about the playoff races and suddenly, there are playoff races in each conference. Last year, there was something to watch down the stretch in the Western Conference but no race at all in the East. This year, there are two teams in the West and a handful in the East who still have a legitimate shot at taking one of the final two wild card spots. Jason and Frank started off the pod by talking about which teams they like to keep things close in the final month of the season and which teams could slip out.

After giving their thoughts on teams that have a lot to play for down the stretch, they talked about teams that have their focus solely on the first-overall pick and Connor Bedard. They dug into which teams would be the best and worst fits from both a league perspective and a hockey perspective.

Tyler also popped in for ‘Buy or Sell’ brought to you by Pointsbet Canada. He asked the guys about Connor McDavid’s ridiculous season and relocation rumours.

  • 296. Western Conference First-Round Playoff Preview

    50:03
It took until the final day of the regular season, but the four Western Conference playoff series are finally locked in and with that, we are ready to go for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Jason and Frank broke down every series in today’s playoff preview podcast. To kick things off, they went through the surprising results from last night that saw the Vegas Golden Knights lose to the Anaheim Ducks and the Los Angeles Kings beat the Chicago Blackhawks, meaning the Golden Knights are now on a flight to Dallas and the Kings are going back to Edmonton for a third straight first-round matchup. They also broke down the upcoming heavyweight tilt between the Colorado Avalanche, who have stumbled their way into the playoffs, and the Winnipeg Jets, whose strong finish gave them home-ice advantage. The Canucks are also back in the playoffs for the first time since the bubble season and despite the fact that they held the top spot in the Pacific Division for the entire season, there are still people doubting them heading into their series against the Predators. Is that fair? Jason and Frank gave their thoughts. They wrapped up the podcast by giving their full Western Conference playoff brackets and then ended things by each tossing out who they think will be lifting Lord Stanley this June.0:45 - Nightly Recap 4:16 - Hart Trophy 13:17 Stars vs Golden Knights Preview18:26 Avalanche vs Jets Preview 29:25 Canucks vs Predators Preview   35:39 Oilers vs Kings Preview 41:59 Western Conference and Cup Final PredictionWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? • 294. The Final Week of the Regular Season

    53:46
With just a few days remaining in the 2023-24 regular season, Frank and Jason broke down everything that’s still on the line as things come to a close. Obviously, there are still two playoff spots up for grabs in the Eastern Conference as the Penguins, Capitals, Islanders, and Red Wings all still have hope. The guys ranked who they think will get the final two spots in the big dance and also talked about what else is on the line this week. There is also a wild tie-breaker scenario brewing that could result in things going down to the sixth tie-breaker. Frank explained all of that. They also hit on Jared Bednar calling out Alexandar Georgiev just days before the playoffs begin. Should the Avs be worried about their current level of play? They’re going to be going up against the red-hot Winnipeg Jets in the first-round of the playoffs. There was a lot of news in the prospect world this week as multiple big name players signed their entry-level deals after the end of the NCAA season, which resulted with Denver winning the National Championship. The guys talked about Cutter Gauthier’s comments before the game, which did not age well.Tyler also swung by with a new edition of Buy or Sell, delivered by DoorDash. They wrapped up the show with a quick update on the Arizona Coyotes relocation situation, which Frank is now calling a win for everybody involved. • 293. The Latest on Relocation

    55:39
It’s been a big 24 hours around the NHL as it sounds more and more like the Arizona Coyotes are going to be relocating to Salt Lake City, Utah. Frank has been all over this news, breaking the news yesterday. He and Jason kicked off the podcast by talking about how it got to this point between the league and the Coyotes and also what the next steps could potentially be in this process.Potential Utah Owner Ryan Smith has a home ready for the team to potentially play in. It’s not a perfect fit though and Frank outlined why the league isn’t worried about the arena situation in Salt Lake City. One angle of this involves Coyotes Owner Alex Meruelo potentially winning the upcoming land auction and getting his new arena project going. In that case, there is a chance that the league still one day grant him an expansion franchise. Frank and Jason talked about just how far off expansion could potentially be.After going through the relocation news, the guys jumped back into what’s been going down on the ice as of late. The Eastern Conference playoff picture is about as clear as mud with the Penguins, Islanders, Red Wings, and Capitals all still alive and in the mix. They debated if anyone could jump ahead this weekend. They also looked at Auston Matthews’ chase for 70-goals and shot down any ideas of him magically becoming a Hart Trophy favourite if he hits the milestone.Tyler swung by for a new edition of Fill in the Blank delivered by DoorDash.1:05 - The latest on relocation10:00 - How did this come together?13:50 - How far off is expansion?22:50 - Eastern Conference playoff race25:45 - Matthews & the Hart TrophyWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? • 292. The Penguins & Islanders have revived their seasons

    57:37
With less than two weeks remaining in the regular season, the playoff race in the Eastern Conference is just getting spicier and spicier. The Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders have gone from afterthoughts to squarely in the thick of things with their recent run.Can either team finish the job and get into the big dance? Frank and Jason started the show off by talking about what’s going on when it comes to the final two playoff spots that are up for grabs. From there, they continued their post-mortem series as they look at teams that have been officially eliminated from the playoffs. They started today with the Seattle Kraken, who came back down to earth after winning a playoff round last season. Can this team turn things around next season? Or do the Kraken need to take a longer-term approach to things? They then went out East and talked about the Ottawa Senators, who Frank says has the most disappointing season out of any team in the league. The two most talked about moments from their season are two empty-net plays and now the question becomes: can this Senators core actually win? New GM Steve Staois has a lot of big decisions to make in his first offseason at the helm. They wrapped it up by talking about the Calgary Flames. Craig Conroy sold off a lot of important pieces throughout this season and now, he has to decide whether or not to embark on a long rebuild or quickly try to re-tool on the fly.Tyler also swung by for a new edition of Buy or Sell, delivered by DoorDash.1:10 - The Eastern Playoff Race10:15 - The state of the Flyers17:50 - The summer in Seattle26:30  - The Senators miss again39:05 - The Calgary Flames44:05 - Buy or SellWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? • 291. The Brawl at MSG & The Penguins Playoff Hopes

    52:26
Things got spicy last night at Madison Square Garden as the Rangers and Devils had an old-school brawl off the opening faceoff. It grabbed the attention of the entire sporting world and to begin today’s podcast, Jason and Frank talked about what went down and the reaction to it.From there, they got into the Eastern Conference playoff race. The Pittsburgh Penguins have suddenly worked themselves right back into the fight as almost everyone else in the race continues to play mediocre hockey. The guys talked about how the Pens could approach their big game tonight against the Capitals. The playoff races haven’t exactly been electric this season and that raises the question of whether or not the NHL should add a play-in round similar to what the NBA does. Frank pushed for it and explained the potential benefits while Gregor pushed back on the idea. They then debated who the five biggest Cup Contenders are heading into the final few weeks of the regular season. Spoiler: the Dallas Stars got a lot of love from the guys.Tyler then swung by for a new edition of Fill in the Blank delivered by DoorDash. He asked them a little bit more about the Dallas Stars' strong season and the seeding races in either conference.1:00 - The Brawl at MSG11:00 - Penguins Playoff Chances16:55 - Playoff Expansion28:16 - Top Five Cup Contenders31:00 - Are the Oilers in Trouble?40:25 - Fill in the BlankWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? • 290. Connor McDavid’s Heater & The Art Ross Race

    01:04:41
The calendar has turned to April and that means we will get Stanley Cup Playoff action this month. There are less than three weeks remaining in the regular season and while the playoff races aren’t as spicy as maybe fans would have liked, there is a fascinating race brewing for the Art Ross Trophy.Connor McDavid has racked up 25 points in his last ten games and is now is right behind both Nathan MacKinnon and Nikita Kucherov and he has games in hand. Jason and Frank started today’s pod by talking about the run that McDavid has been on and who they like in the Art Ross race. That also led to some talk about the Hart Trophy. From there, Frank shared some information on the NCAA Frozen Four tournament. There are some players who’ve been eliminated that are now eligible to sign with NHL teams but a handful of the more big-name prospects have advanced in the tournament and likely won’t be turning pro this season. The guys then continued their post-mortem series by going in-depth on a handful of rebuilding teams. The San Jose Sharks have finally fully committed to their rebuild, but how long will it take for them to become relevant again? They also took a look at the Chicago Blackhawks and the Arizona Coyotes.Tyler also popped in for a new edition of Buy or Sell delivered by DoorDash.8:20 - Playoff race update10:10 - Art Ross race23:50 - Frozen Four31:10 - The San Jose Sharks tear down37:20 - Chicago Blackhawks post mortem45:10 - The future of the CoyotesWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? • 289. Looking Ahead For The NHL’s Basement Dwellers

    47:33
Frank and Jason are back with another fresh edition of The DFO Rundown. They kicked off today’s show by talking about the comments that were made about Oilers forward Zach Hyman earlier this week and the reaction to it. Hyman responded about as well as he could have, scoring the OT Winner in the Oilers' win over the Jets on Tuesday. From there, they decided to take a break from all the talk about the playoff races and instead decided to go to the bottom of the NHL standings and dug into the futures of some of the league's bottom feeders. They started with the Anaheim Ducks. They missed the playoffs again, but was this season a step forward? Frank and Jason debated that. They then dug into the tire-fire that was the Columbus Blue Jackets, who are heading into the summer in need of some big move but still need to name a General Manager.Tyler then swung by for a new edition of Buy or Sell delivered by DoorDash. • 288. Two New Members of the 50-Goal Club

    54:20
As we continue to creep closer to the end of the regular season, there are plenty of storylines emerging. Frank and Jason started the show by talking about the two newest members of the 50-goal club: Sam Reinhart and Zach Hyman. They broke down each players path to the milestone and talked about the narrative that Hymans success is only due to playing with Connor McDavid. From there, they quickly hit on some seeding races in both the East and West. The Predators just keep on rolling and have no more or less locked themselves into the top wild-card spot in the West. Out East, the Capitals are now in the drivers seat when it comes to the final playoff spot. They then got into the Hart Trophy debate. Nathan MacKinnon is the odds on favourite right now but has he locked up the award? The guys debated that and talked about whether or not Kucherov or McDavid have a realistic shot at winning the award.Frank then threw out the idea of a comeback player of the year award and who would win that hypothetical award. Jason also wondered about a breakout player of the year award.Tyler then swung by for a new edition of Buy or Sell delivered by DoorDash.
