Steven Stamkos Returns to Tampa Bay

Ep. 331

Jason and Frank are back with another fresh episode of The DFO Rundown. The guys kicked off today’s show with some drama in Long Island. The Islanders are seemingly having some issues between Head Coach, Patrick Roy, and GM, Lou Lamoriello.

They then jump right into the Maple Leafs extension of Jake McCabe. (5 Years - $4.51M)

Tonight is a big night for Steven Stamkos, heading back to Tampa for the first time since being traded. Will this trade end up being a smart move? We suspect a warm welcome for Stamkos tonight.

The guys then dive deeper into the Atlantic division to discuss the rough start to the season for both Boston and Buffalo.

Should NHL teams have a 3rd professional goalie on the roster that travels with the team and fills in when necessary in emergency situations?

Tyler Yaremchuk is on a much deserved vacation to Seattle to watch his Bills play the Seahawks so Producer Patrick Puff fills in for today’s episode of Buy or Sell brought to you by bet365.

You could argue the Golden Knights currently have one of the best lines in the NHL, what could Jack Eichel's next contract look like?

Did the Buffalo Sabres make the right call moving on from Jack Eichel? Has Alex Tuch turned out to be a solid return in the trade?

  • 338. The Trade Market Begins To Form

    52:23||Ep. 338
    The first trade targets list of the season has dropped and that means it’s officially time to start talking about what big moves we could see this year! Frank and Jason went through some of the more intriguing players on the board and which ones are more likely to move than others.Before they dug into that, they talked about the Nashville Predators and their continued struggles. Last night, they were assessed a minor penalty for not icing the proper starting lineup and wound up getting shutout by the Seattle Kraken. That led to the guys talking about the playoff picture in the West and which teams will find ways to stay in the conversation this year and who could fall out in the next few months.They then got into the trade talk and dug into Frank’s list. They started with Joel Farabee who is on the board even though he has three more years on his current deal. Frank believes he has 35+ goal potential and he just needs to be put in the right situation.They also talked about Michael Matheson, who Gregor thinks is the most intriguing defenseman on the board. Is it smart for the Habs to move on from their best defenseman though?They also had a long conversation about Blue Jackets forward Mathieu Olivier. Gregor thinks he would be a great add for a contender but also thinks the Blue Jackets would be foolish to move him while Frank thinks they should cash in on his value.There was some significant injury news this week too as the Capitals are going to be without Alex Ovechkin for the next few weeks. The timing could not have been any worse as he was on an absolute heater. Frank gave an update on when he could come back today.Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Fill in the Blank where he asked the guys about some award long-shots and the Predators playoff chances.They wrapped with some talk about the Toronto Maple Leafs and the run they’ve been on despite their injuries. They also gave their thoughts on the Jim Montgomery firing in Boston.1:05 - Predators struggles continue10:45 - Joel Farabee’s availability16:40 - Could the Habs trade Mike Matheson?22:00 - CBJ & Mathieu Olivier32:10 - Ovechkin’s injury33:35 - Fill in the Blank44:40 - Montgomery firingWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? • 337. Alex Ovechkin isn’t slowing down & Ryan Reaves Gets 5-Games

    56:57||Ep. 337
    Jason and Frank are back with a fresh episode of The DFO Rundown to recap what was a wildly eventful weekend in the NHL. To start, they talked about Alex Ovechkin’s ridiculous production. The 39-year-old is on pace for 111 points and his projected date to pass Wayne Gretzky for the most goals of all time is getting closer and closer.The Capitals have been red-hot so far this season and it’s not just Ovechkin driving things. Frank pointed out that this team is looking very balanced. They also talked about another team in the Eastern Conference: the Carolina Hurricanes. They’re being driven by Martin Necas’ hot start and that created a big debate about whether or not he’s just a player on a hot-streak or a budding star.They then dug into the Ryan Reaves hit on Darnell Nurse, which resulted in Reaves getting a five-game suspension. Did the league get this right? Was the hit as bad as the social media commentary made it out to be? The guys talked about it.They also talked about the struggles in Chicago. The team is struggling to string together wins and even more surprisingly, Connor Bedard is struggling and it all came to a front on Saturday night as he was frustrated in his return to his hometown of Vancouver.Tyler then popped in for Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about a few futures bets he likes over at Bet365.They wrapped up the show with a follow up on their conversation from last week about limiting contract terms, the Flyers' bounce back over their last ten games and a surprising contender in the Calder Trophy race.1:00 - Ovechkin’s crazy pace9:20 - Necas’ hot start14:50 - Ryan Reaves suspension21:05 - Bedard & the Blackhawks struggle34:55 - Buy or Sell44:20 - Limiting contract term47:00 - Flyers bounce back52:30 - Dustin Wolf & the Flames$250 Fanatics Gift Card Giveaway: https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/contests/speak-up-and-scoreWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? • 336. What changes could the next CBA bring?

    58:51||Ep. 336
    Frank is back from the GM Meetings and has some notes on what was discussed as some of the most influential minds in hockey got together. The league and the players association are getting close to having to negotiate a new CBA and that means each side is starting to have internal discussions about what they could want. That’s where the guys started today on the podcast and it led to some interesting debates about whether or not they could change the term limits for player contracts, how LTIR could change, and other things that could be changed in the next CBA.Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Fill in the Blank where he asked the guys who their quarter way Jack Adams winner would be and how many career points Connor McDavid will finish with when all is said and done.After that, they talked a little bit more about McDavid’s upcoming milestone as he closes in on 1000 career points. Frank talked about a few players in the 1000 point club who were maybe a little under appreciated. They wrapped up the show by talking about the next Hockey Hall of Fame class and who are the locks to get in. They debated Carey Price, Joe Thornton, Duncan Keith, Ryan Getzlaf, and Duncan Keith and their chances of getting in.2:20 - Term limits17:44 - How could LTIR change?32:40 - Fill in the Blank46:00 - Under Appreciated players in the 1k club52:00 - Next HHOF Class$250 Fanatics Gift Card Giveaway: https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/contests/speak-up-and-scoreWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? • 335. Hall of Fame Weekend Recap & Ovechkin’s chase

    52:28||Ep. 335
    Today on The DFO Rundown, Jason and Frank started off by talking about Hall of Fame weekend in Toronto. Frank was in attendance for the induction ceremony and talked about why this weekend is one his his favourites. Jeremy Roenick stole the show with his Mike Keenan urinal story which reminded Frank that he’s been through a similar experience.They also talked about some of the names eligible for the 2025 HHOF Class.From there, they moved on to Alex Ovechkin and the feverish pace he’s off to this season. The question is no longer “will he catch Wayne Gretzky?” it’s now “when will he catch him?” and as he continues to pile up the goals, there becomes a better and better chance that he actually breaks The Great One’s record in fewer games.Tyler then popped in for Buy or Sell where he asked the guys just how high the Winnipeg Jets could soar, how long it will take McDavid to get back into the top ten of league scoring, and whether or now we’ll see a coach get fired this month.After that, Gregor and Frank talked about Nathan MacKinnon’s crazy production this season and how even with that, the Avs continue to look mediocre.Frank wrapped up the pod by telling us what he’s expected to hear at the GM Meetings on Tuesday.1:10 - HHOF Weekend12:15 - Ovechkin’s record chase20:50 - Matthews injury & Leafs roster update22:15 - Buy or Sell (Penguins, Jets, McDavid)35:00 - MacKinnon’s crazy pace49:20 - GM Meetings preview$250 Fanatics Gift Card Giveaway: https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/contests/speak-up-and-scoreWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? • 334. Can the Preds turn it around?

    54:13||Ep. 334
    Jason Gregor and Frank Seravalli are back with another edition of of The DFO Rundown as they tackled some big stories from around the NHL. The one quote that dominated headlines this week was Predators GM Barry Trotz saying that if his team doesn’t turn it around he will start looking at his rebuilding plans. Things are ugly in Nashville after they spent more than any other team this offseason, can it turn around soon? They gave their thoughts.They then got into another struggling team in the West. The Anaheim Ducks were hoping to step out of their rebuild and start pushing for a playoff spot with their young core but it is not going to plan. Lukas Dostal is looking like a future star between the pipes but even with his elite play, they’re struggling to win. Does something need to change in Anaheim? Frank thinks so.Gregor then gave some quick stats before Tyler popped in with a fresh edition of Fill in the Blank brought to you by Bet365. He asked the guys about who the next team to make a trade will be, a pair of pending UFAs who are looking to get paid, and whether or not this years Stanley Cup winner could be a first time winner.They wrapped up by talking about the Seattle Kraken, who Frank dubbed “the New York Islanders of the west”. They can’t score and Frank thinks there needs to be a bigger sense of urgency to find themselves a star player. Jason thinks this all goes back to them fumbling the expansion draft.1:55 - Trotz’s comments11:00 - Ducks struggles20:55 - Gregor’s fast stats31:10 - Fill in the Blank47:10 - Kraken keep strugglingWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? • 333. The NHLPA Acknowledges CTE & Alex Ovechkin Can’t Stop Scoring

    54:14||Ep. 333
    Frank and Jason are back with a fresh episode of the podcast following a wild Halloween weekend around the league. To start, they talked about their weekends which featured football and costume parties. It was a wildly unique weekend recap from the guys.Frank also spent some time in Boston talking with NHLPA Executive Director Marty Walsh. It’s the first time that they’ve acknowledged CTE and have formed a new board. Franke explained why this is significant and what the NHLPA hopes to accomplish.Sticking with Boston, it was a drama-filled weekend for the Bruins. While they won both of their games, there was more drama as Jim Montgomery benched David Pastrnak for the entire third period after a turnover. Frank wondered if it was a bridge too far.They then went out west and talked about the Seattle Kraken, who might be open to trading a forward. They also talked about the Carolina Hurricanes and the red-hot Martin Necas. Plus, Alex Ovechkin has firing home pucks like vintage Ovi and the Caps are also racking up the wins.Tyler then popped in for a fresh edition of Buy or Sell, brought to you by Bet365. • 332. Can the Avs & Oilers survive their injury woes?

    55:00||Ep. 332
    To begin an all new edition of The DFO Rundown, Jason and Frank talked about a pair of teams that are currently fighting through some pretty big injury problems.For the Colorado Avalanche, the sheer number of players they’re missing is the problem. With the likes of Ross Colton, Arturri Lehkonen and Jonathan Drouin joining Gabriel Landeskog and Valeri Nichuskin on the injured reserve, they’re basically missing everyone in their top-six with the exception of Mikko Rantanen and Nathan MacKinnon. Can Jared Bednar and company get through this stretch without putting themselves too far behind in the Central Division?The Oilers are only dealing with one injury but it’s a big one as they’ll be without Connor McDavid for the next 2-3 weeks. Gregor wondered if this could be a wakeup call for the team while Frank talked about the teams lack of reaction when their Captain went down.From there, they talked a bit about the Columbus Blue Jackets, who are suddenly looking like an offensive powerhouse. They also looked at Kyle Connor’s remarkable start to the season, which Gregor thinks will result in a 50-goal season. That led them to talking about Team USA’s potential roster at the Four Nation’s Faceoff and some of the tough decisions that they’re going to need to make.Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Fill in the Blank where he asked the guys about a pair of struggling Eastern Conference teams in the Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings and also, which NHL franchises they’d be buying shares in right now if they could.1:20 - Avs & their injuries9:55 - Oilers lose McDavid15:05 - Blue Jackets offensive firepower22:00 - Team USA’s roster decisions42:30 - Fill in the BlankWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? • 330. Are The Minnesota Wild Legit?

    58:18||Ep. 330
    Jason and Frank are back with another fresh episode of The DFO Rundown. The guys kicked off today’s show with a little bit of talk about Halloween including how they handle giving out candy at their house. They then got into some talk about a pair of teams who are continuing their hot streaks to start the year: the Calgary Flames and the Minnesota Wild.Frank admitted that he should have been higher on the Wild and listed the reasons why they will be a playoff team this season. Gregor talked about how impressive it’s been that they’ve remained competitive even with their dead cap issues.As for the Flames, they’re proving that they won’t be a bottom-feeder. Frank says that they were never capable of truly bottoming out. The guys also talked about one of the best stories of the season in Justin Kirkland, or as Flames fans are calling him “Kirkland Signature”.From there, they talked about Cale Makar’s start to the season and how big the gap is between the Avs defenseman and the rest of the NHL. They then talked about the Leafs' start to the year, their improved blueline, and what they’re going to do with their goaltending situation.That led to Gregor’s take on the Montreal Canadiens blueline. He thinks the Habs made a mistake coming into the season with as young and small of a defence as they have, he also thinks that they’re playing Lane Hutson far too much. Frank disagreed with the Hutson take and explained why the hate he’s been getting is very unjustified.Tyler then swung by for a fresh edition of Fill in the Blank, presented by Bet365. He asked the guys about which team has changed their perception of them the most, the rash of injuries that the Utah Hockey Club has been dealing with, and some early season regrets.8:00 - Flames & Wild off to hot starts17:00 - Makar vs Hughes21:30 - The Leafs start to the year25:35 - Canadiens blueline38:40 - Fill in the BlankWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team?
