A Final Look at the big 4 Nations Roster Decisions

Ep. 340

Happy Thanksgiving! Jason and Frank recorded a fresh episode of the podcast as the long weekend in the USA gets going. After some talk about the football schedule and Frank’s favourites parts of the holiday, the guys got into some talk about the toughest decisions that each team at the upcoming 4 Nations Faceoff is facing.

This is the final podcast before the teams are going to be officially announced so they went through all four teams and talked about some of the bubble players that could end up making the cut.

They started with Team USA where the goaltending seems locked in but there are a handful of open spots when it comes to both the forwards and defense. Players like Tage Thompson, Zach Werenski, and Chris Krieder are some of the names sparking up the most debate.

For Team Canada, they discussed who the fourth-line centre should be with names like John Tavares, Connor Bedard, Nick Suzuki and Mark Schiefele all being possibilities. On the blueline, they debated the chances that someone like Evan Bouchard has of being on the team.

The goaltending is obviously a soft spot for Canada and Jason and Frank gave their thoughts on who they could end up going with between the pipes.

After going through the projected rosters for Finland and Sweden, they brought in Tyler Yaremchuk for a new edition of Fill in the Blank where he asked the guys about the playoff picture at the quarter way mark of the season and the trade rumours swirling around the New York Rangers.

  • 398. How close are the Habs to contending? PLUS: A Full Free Agency Recap

    01:09:40||Ep. 398
    Today on the DFO Rundown, Jason Gregor was joined by Jeff Marek from The Sheet to recap everything we’ve seen over the last 72 hours in the NHL.There were some big contracts handed out as the free agency window opened and usually, this is the time of the year where big mistakes are made. The guys started today’s podcast by talking about one team that they think really improved themselves this summer: the Montreal Canadiens.Are they good enough to be a team that wins playoff rounds next year? They discussed it.From there, they talked about the moves that the Anaheim Ducks made so far this summer. They brought in some veterans in Chris Krieder and Mikael Granlund and while they moved on from Trevor Zegras, it’s easy to see a path to the Ducks improving.They then talked about the Mitch Marner saga and him officially becoming a member of the Vegas Golden Knights. Should Vegas be considered the favourites in the West? They also touched on the way the Maple Leafs handled the situation and the Florida Panthers finding a way to keep all their free agents around.Tyler then popped in for Buy or Sell where he asked about the Ken Holland’s moves with the Kings, the bottom-five teams in the league and the remaining free agents on the board.They wrapped up the show by talking about James Reimer and some of the names still out on the market, the impact some of the new Head Coaches around the league could have and the state of the Dallas Stars after the hiring of Glen Gulutzan.1:10 - How much better are the Habs?8:30 - Are the Ducks good enough?15:40 - Marner & the Golden Knights23:00 - The Leafs rebound27:30 - Bennett & the Panthers33:10 - Buy or Sell50:00 - The new coaches52:00 - Stars hire GulutzanWant to hear more from Jason and the entire DFO team? • 397. Breaking Down Draft Weekend & Previewing Free Agency with Chris Pronger

    57:34||Ep. 397
    The DFO Rundown is back and with draft weekend in the rear view mirror and free agency opening up tomorrow, there was no shortage of talking points for Jason Gregor. He began the show by going through a little bit of what we saw over the last 72 hours in the league from the Islanders picking first overall to some of the big extensions that were signed.Jason was then joined by guest co-host Chris Pronger. The Hall of Fame defenseman talked about the end of his career when he was trying to overcome an eye injury and life after hockey, including his stint with the Florida Panthers organization.The guys then got into free agency. Teams finally have some money to spend and that could result in some pretty shocking contracts. They talked about what smart teams will do with their money and they also talked about some of the big free agents on the board, like Mitch Marner, who is rumoured to be heading to the Vegas Golden Knights.Jason also got Chris’ take on this years crop of free agent defensemen. Provorov, Ekblad, and Gavrikov are all coming from very different situations but teams are always hungry for defensemen this time of year. Could one of those three get a bigger contract than we think? Pronger also talked about how going to a different system could expose some flaws in their games.Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Fill in the Blank where he asked the guys about who could increase their Stanley Cup odds the most in the next week, the New York Islanders big weekend and they shared their favourite under the radar free agent options.1:00 - Draft weekend recap13:50 - Chris Pronger on life after hockey26:10 - Best on Best hockey22:50 - Mitch Marner’s future39:55 - Free Agent Defensemen41:00 - Fill in the Blank50:00 - Under the radar optionsWant to hear more from Jason and the entire DFO team? • 396. A New CBA Is Coming & The Sabres Send Peterka To Utah

    01:02:44||Ep. 396
    Frank and Jason are back with another offseason edition of The DFO Rundown, and today’s was a busy one. Earlier this morning, Frank broke the story that a new CBA is coming and he outlined all of the changes that are coming with that. The guys dug into all of that and Gregor said what he liked and didn’t like about some of the new elements of the CBA, which will kick in for the 2026-27 season.Before they talked about that, they did discuss the massive deal that went down on Thursday night as the Buffalo Sabres sent JJ Peterka to the Utah Mammoth in exchange for Josh Doan and Michael Kesselring. The deal seems a bit underwhelming on the surface and the guys talked about that. Frank also shared what some other options may have been for GM Kevyn Adams.They then really sunk their teeth into the new CBA and new massive changes that are coming, including new term limits, a closing of the LTIR loophole, and an 84-game regular season.Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Buy or Sell, where he asked the guys about the upcoming free agent class and the chances of a top ten pick getting moved in the 2025 NHL Draft.In the back half of the show, they did their offseason previews for the eight playoff teams in the Eastern Conference. The Canadiens are apparently itching to make some big moves, but they’re not alone. The Devils and Hurricanes are likely in that boat as well. The Leafs could also be a team that looks very different next season.The challenge for some of the other competitors like the Panthers, will be trying to dance around some cap challenges.They wrapped up the show with an announcement about the future of the podcast as Frank officially moves on from Daily Faceoff after this week.0:45 - Utah lands Peterka6:00 - What else was on the table for Buffalo?9:55 - The new CBA22:54 - Buy or Sell (Top 10 Free Agents, Penguins, Moving a Top 10 Pick)32:40 - Montreal Canadiens38:00 - New Jersey Devils42:10 - Ottawa Senators46:35 - Tampa Bay Lightning51:50 - Washington Capitals53:40 - Carolina Hurricanes55:25 - Toronto Maple Leafs57:50 - Florida PanthersWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? • 395. Trade Market Check In & The Offseason Ahead for the Western Conference Playoff Teams

    01:18:41||Ep. 395
    It’s the week of the NHL Draft and we are just eight days away from the beginning of free agency. While there wasn’t a lot of news this weekend around the league, there is a lot going on behind the scenes and Frank kicked off today’s edition of The DFO Rundown by giving a quick update on the trade market. Are the Sabres getting closer to moving JJ Peterka? Will the Islanders move Noah Dobson by the draft?From there, they dug into their offseason previews for the eight teams in the Western Conference that made the playoffs. They started with the St. Louis Blues, who are facing some big questions this summer. The Minnesota Wild are in a position where they can be hyper-aggressive. The Colorado Avalanche are low on funds, but need to make some moves to fix a roster that was bounced in the first round. The Los Angeles Kings are in an interesting spot with a new GM and boatload of cap space.They kept rolling and hit on the Winnipeg Jets, who are bringing in 3x Stanley Cup Champion Jonathan Toews. What else will Kevin Cheveldayoff do? The guys gave their takes. Vegas never sits still in the offseason and the expectacion is that they will push hard for Mitch Marner. The Dallas Stars already made some spicy decisions after getting bounced by the Oilers in the Western Confernce Final. They still need a coach, but will that be the last big move they make?They wrapped by talking about the Oilers, the McDavid extension, and what they need to do in order to get back to the Stanley Cup Final.Tyler joined for Buy or Sell where he asked about Marner’s contract, Jake Allen’s place on the goalie market, and the Rasmus Andersson situation in Calgary.1:45 - Peterka, Dobson and more8:20 - St. Louis Blues15:00 - Minnesota Wild21:00 - Contract Extensions (Kaprizov and McDavid)25:45 - Colorado Avalanche32:45 - Los Angeles Kings40:20 - Fill in the Blank52:00 - Winnipeg Jets1:00:00 - Vegas Golden Knights1:05:25 - Dallas Stars1:07:55 - Edmonton OilersWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? • 394. The Panthers Repeat As Cup Champs & An Eastern Conference Playoff Preview

    01:01:55||Ep. 394
    And with that, the 2024-25 NHL season has come to a close and for a second straight season, the Florida Panthers are Stanley Cup Champions. Jason and Frank kicked off today’s episode of The DFO Rundown by talking about the Panthers once again winning hockey’s ultimate prize.For GM Bill Zito, the celebration is short-lived as he now has to focus on trying to keep this group together despite a tight salary cap situation. Frank talked about just how many of the big free agents he thinks the Panthers could hang onto.They then talked about the Edmonton Oilers, who got to within two games of winning it all. Now, they face a lot of big offseason questions. The first is around Evander Kane and the NHL’s investigation into their use of LTIR. Frank gave some insight into that. They also talked about the Trent Frederic extension.They then got into their Eastern Conference offseason preview, beginning with the Philadelphia Flyers. The list of needs for GM Danny Briere is long and they have plenty of assets and cap space to use if they want to. The Boston Bruins are going to be looking to bounce back and add some scoring punch to their roster but they are not the only team in that boat. The Rangers, Red Wings, and Sabres are all looking to take steps forward.Tyler then popped on for Buy or Sell, where he asked the guys about what playoff team is going to be the busiest this summer and how many players from this last Cup Final could he Hall of Famers one day.0:15 - Panthers repeat as Cup Champs4:00 - Evander Kane Investigation11:30 - Trent Frederic Extension17:30 - Philadelphia Flyers23:00 - Boston Bruins28:45 - Buffalo Sabres35:50 - Pittsburgh Penguins39:25 - New York Islanders42:55 - New York Rangers46:25 - Detroit Red Wings50:05 - Columbus Blue Jackets56:20 - Buy or SellWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? • 393. A Western Conference Offseason Preview

    01:08:37||Ep. 393
    Kick off your week with an all new episode of The DFO Rundown with Jason Gregor and Frank Seravalli as they give you a full offseason preview for each of the eight non-playoff teams in the Western Conference.They started in the basement with the San Jose Sharks, who have boatloads of cap space. Should GM Mike Grier spend like crazy? Or stay the course? The guys debated that. They then had a similar conversation about the Chicago Blackhawks.The Nashville Predators were one of the more disappointing teams in the NHL this year and now, they’ll try to get things back on the rails. That could involve trading one of the players they signed last summer. The Seattle Kraken have some contracts that Frank thinks they need to move and probably won’t be buyers.Speaking of buyers, that’s the expectation in both Anaheim and Utah. Both Frank and Jason agreed that those two teams should be very aggressive this summer. They then went up to Canada to talk about the Vancouver Canucks, who are trying to turn over a new leaf after a drama filled 2024-25 season and have some clear holes on their roster. The Calgary Flames were one of the more positive surprises in the NHL and instead of heading towards a rebuild, GM Craig Conroy could try to add to this group and try make them a legit playoff team.Tyler then popped on for a new edition of Fill in the Blank where he asked the guys about Sam Bennett’s Conn Smythe chances and the rumblings about NHL expansion.They wrapped up the show with some Stanley Cup Final talk as the Panthers have the Oilers on the brink of elimination for a second consecutive season. Can they finish things off on Tuesday? Or will the Oilers drag them back to Alberta?2:10 - San Jose Sharks9:10 - Chicago Blackhawks14:40 - Nashville Predators21:20 - Seattle Kraken26:20 - Anaheim Ducks30:25 - Utah Mammoth34:20 - Vancouver Canucks41:10 - Calgary Flames46:45 - Fill in the Blank59:50 - Game 6 PreviewWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? • 392. Eyeing Up Potential Offer Sheets & New Trade Targets

    49:45||Ep. 392
    Frank and Jason are back with a fresh episode of The DFO Rundown. There’s only been one Stanley Cup Final game since the last pod on Monday, so today they focused more on some offseason topics, starting with the first trade of the summer as Chris Kreider is on the verge of being dealt to the Anaheim Ducks.After breaking down that deal, they got into Frank’s five offer sheet candidates including Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies. Could a team take a big swing and offer Knies a $10m+ deal? Frank thinks it’s possible but Gregor says any team doing that would be foolish.From there, they talked about what the Rangers' next move could be and speculated on K’Andre Miller’s future with the team. They also broke down the Isaac Howard situation in Tampa Bay.Tyler then popped on for a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about Mitch Marner’s rights, two of the new big names on Frank’s trade targets board, and he led them into some Stanley Cup Final talk.They wrapped up the show by talking about some potential adjustments for the Edmonton Oilers as they look to bounce back from getting blown out in Game 3. For the Panthers, they’ll look to take a 3-1 stranglehold and get to within one win of their second straight Stanley Cup.1:30 - Kreider to the Ducks7:30 - Offer sheet watch12:10 - Could Knies make $10m+?26:30 - Rangers next move29:15 - Isaac Howard’s future35:00 - Buy or Sell42:38 - Stanley Cup FinalWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? The Stanley Cup Final is officially underway and both Jason and Frank were in the building last night to take in the action from Edmonton.They talked about the atmosphere inside Rogers Place and what stood out in Game 1 of the series. It was a tight checking game that was ultimately decided by one goal. Gregor talked about some of the historical feats that occurred last night with the Oilers comeback and Draisaitl’s overtime winner. Frank talked about how if this series is going to be tight, the Oilers depth could be a massive advantage.One thing the guys both agreed on: this should end up being a pretty long series.After that, Tyler popped on with a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about the last two teams who filled their Head Coaching vacancies, Brock Nelson’s three-year extension in Colorado, and the idea of the players voting on more year end awards, which led to an interesting discussion about the NHL Awards.From there, the guys went more in depth on the Marco Sturm hiring in Boston and the Penguins deciding on a first time Head Coach themselves in Dan Muse.
