The Daily Meditation with Brother Richard
Recovering the Form: Returning to the Basics of Meditation
In this guided Christian meditation, Brother Richard returns to the basic form of meditation—the simple, foundational practice that underpins every contemplative tradition.
Whether you're completely new to meditation, returning after a break, or simply looking to strengthen your daily practice, this session revisits the essential skills of stable sitting, body awareness, breath awareness and inner stillness. By returning to these foundations again and again, we gradually develop the "meditation muscles" that deepen awareness, strengthen attention and open us more fully to God's loving presence.
This gentle practice reminds us that there is no need to strive or perform. We simply begin again, noticing the body, observing thoughts and emotions without judgement, and resting in the still point between each breath where peace and divine presence are always waiting.
Perfect for daily Christian meditation, contemplative prayer, relaxation, preparing for restful sleep, or renewing your meditation practice after time away.

201. Meditation in a Time of Anxiety (Repost)
12:11||Ep. 201In this meditation, I reflect on how meditation can support us during periods of anxiety, stress and emotional overwhelm.Very often, when anxiety enters our lives, the first things we let go of are the practices that help to steady and ground us. This meditation gently reminds us that these difficult moments are precisely when contemplative practice becomes most important.Together, we begin by simply noticing how anxiety manifests within the body — perhaps in the stomach, chest, shoulders, jaw or breath itself. Without judgement or resistance, we learn to meet these sensations with gentleness, awareness and compassion. As the meditation deepens, we use the breath as an anchor, gradually allowing the body to soften and the breath to settle naturally into a calmer rhythm. We then move towards the still point at the centre of the breath cycle — the place of silence, peace and spaciousness that always remains available beneath anxiety and worry. This practice is not about suppressing anxiety, but about learning to remain present, grounded and connected to peace even while difficult emotions are present. This meditation offers support for anxiety, stress relief, emotional grounding and contemplative stillness.Chapters:00:00 – Introduction: Meditation during anxiety00:43 – Opening bell00:51 – Why practice matters most during stress01:48 – Grounding in the body and noticing anxiety03:08 – Meeting anxious areas with gentleness04:12 – Observing the breath during anxiety05:35 – Using the breath as an anchor07:13 – Resting in the still point of the breath08:20 – Expanding inner silence and peace09:19 – Divine love and the present moment10:35 – Bringing calm into the rest of the day11:47 – Closing bell
200. Meditation on the Natural World: The Wisdom of the Beasts
12:59||Ep. 200In this guided Christian meditation, Brother Richard continues his Meditations on the Natural World series by reflecting on the wisdom of the beasts of the earth.Inspired by the Franciscan tradition, this meditation invites us to rediscover our place within creation—not as separate from the natural world, but as part of God's living family. Through gentle body awareness, imagination and contemplation, we learn from the animals around us: their presence, simplicity, trust and harmony with the world they inhabit. As we remember beloved companion animals, contemplate the diversity of life on earth, and give thanks for our own bodies, we're invited to grow in reverence for all creation and to embrace our calling as faithful stewards of God's gifts.Perfect for daily Christian meditation, contemplative prayer, relaxation, preparing for restful sleep, or anyone seeking a deeper connection with God through the beauty and wisdom of the natural world.Chapters 00:00 – Introduction: The wisdom of the beasts 01:00 – Opening bell 01:09 – Receiving your body as gift 02:49 – Letting go of criticism 04:49 – Grounded in the earth 05:48 – Learning from companion animals 07:33 – The wisdom of all creatures 09:05 – What can this animal teach me? 10:39 – Gratitude for the beasts of the earth 11:29 – Resolution for the day 12:53 – Closing bell
199. Meditation Master: Robert Lax and the Inner Garden
12:27||Ep. 199In this guided Christian meditation, Brother Richard reflects on the wisdom of the poet and meditation teacher Robert Lax, who wrote: "Cultivation is the turning of a jungle into a garden without destroying a single leaf."Using this beautiful image, this meditation invites us to approach our inner life with gentleness rather than judgement. Instead of trying to force change or reject the parts of ourselves we struggle with, we learn to cultivate awareness, compassion and openness to God's transforming grace.Through breath awareness, relaxation and contemplative prayer, you'll be encouraged to recognise yourself as a work in progress—already loved, already held by God, and gently growing towards wholeness. This meditation is a reminder that spiritual growth comes not through striving for perfection, but through patient attention, kindness and trust in divine love.Perfect for daily Christian meditation, contemplative prayer, relaxation, preparing for restful sleep, or anyone seeking greater self-acceptance, inner peace and spiritual renewal.Chapters 00:00 – Introduction: Robert Lax and cultivation 00:48 – Opening bell 01:04 – Arriving just as you are 02:10 – Releasing tension and finding stillness 03:58 – Becoming aware of your whole being 05:24 – A work in progress 07:00 – Cultivating the inner garden 08:57 – Cooperating with divine grace 10:19 – Jungle becoming garden 11:12 – Resolution for the day 12:12 – Closing bell
198. Self-Compassion Meditation: Becoming the Beloved
12:50||Ep. 198We often find it easier to show compassion to others than to ourselves. In this gentle Christian meditation, Brother Richard invites you to discover the practice of self-compassion—receiving yourself with the same kindness, patience and mercy that God offers to you.Through breath awareness, relaxation and prayerful reflection, you'll learn to hold your struggles without judgement, recognise yourself as beloved, and allow compassion to become the foundation of your relationship with yourself and with others.Whether you're beginning your day, winding down before sleep, or simply seeking a moment of calm, this guided meditation offers a peaceful space to rest in God's love and renew your heart.Chapters 00:00 – Introduction: The path of compassion 00:58 – Opening bell 01:17 – Settling into meditation 02:39 – Relaxing the whole body 03:21 – Offering compassion to yourself 05:30 – Holding your struggles with kindness 08:04 – Loving yourself as the beloved 10:18 – Sharing compassion with the world 11:20 – Resolution for the day 12:37 – Closing bell
197. Light Meditation: Created, Inner and Divine Light
13:02||Ep. 197In this meditation, we reflect on one of the oldest and richest symbols in the Christian contemplative tradition: light.Beginning with the light that surrounds us each day—from candles and lamps to the sun, moon and stars—we gradually turn our attention to the inner light of awareness that shines within every human being. Finally, we contemplate what the Christian mystical tradition calls uncreated light: the divine light that is the source of all creation and the light by which we perceive every other light.Through gentle awareness of the breath, gratitude and visualisation, this meditation invites us to recognise that we are always surrounded by light, sustained by light, and ultimately held in the loving presence of divine light. This meditation supports contemplative prayer, mindfulness, gratitude, spiritual awareness and a deeper appreciation of God's presence throughout creation.Chapters 00:00 – Introduction: The gift of light 00:43 – Opening bell 00:56 – Entering the present moment 01:16 – Ritual gesture and settling into posture 02:01 – Closing the eyes and noticing light 02:52 – Reflecting on sources of human-made light 03:49 – The light of the natural world 04:42 – Discovering the inner light of awareness 05:45 – Breathing light in and sharing light out 06:20 – The body as a bearer of light 07:38 – Created light and uncreated light 08:49 – Dwelling in divine light 10:03 – Resolution to notice light each day 10:34 – Closing bell
195. Bone Breathing Meditation: Deepening Inner Awareness
11:24||Ep. 195In this guided Christian meditation, Brother Richard introduces the ancient contemplative practice of bone breathing—a powerful visualisation that deepens awareness of the body, the breath and the present moment.Beginning with gentle breath awareness, this meditation gradually draws your attention inward to the living structure of your skeleton, inviting you to imagine each breath moving through your bones, filling them with light, peace and healing. This practice cultivates a profound sense of embodiment, helping you relax deeply while becoming more aware of the extraordinary gift of your physical being.Whether you're seeking relief from stress and anxiety, looking to reconnect with your body through mindful awareness, or hoping to deepen your Christian meditation practice, this meditation offers a peaceful way to cultivate stillness, gratitude and the awareness of God's presence.Perfect for daily Christian meditation, contemplative prayer, relaxation, preparing for restful sleep, or simply returning to the peace of the present moment.Chapters 00:00 – Introduction: The practice of bone breathing 00:43 – Opening bell 01:00 – Settling into meditation 02:42 – Resting in the breath 04:30 – Becoming aware of the skeleton 06:41 – Breathing between the bones 08:19 – Filling the bones with light 10:06 – Returning to the whole body 10:41 – Resolution for the day 10:56 – Closing bell
194. Body Awareness Meditation: Deepening Your Anchor in the Body (Repost)
12:32||Ep. 194In this meditation, I guide you into a simple practice of deepening your awareness of the body as an anchor into the present moment. We begin by checking in with the body and noticing what it is like to sit, bringing attention to the points of contact with the ground and the physical sensations of being here. From there, awareness moves more closely into the body, focusing on subtle sensations in the hands, arms and chest. You are invited to explore these sensations with curiosity, noticing even the smallest movements and changes.Through this practice, the body becomes a place of steady awareness. By gently returning to a single point of sensation whenever distraction arises, you can anchor yourself more fully in the present moment. As awareness deepens, a sense of steadiness and gratitude begins to emerge, grounded in the simple experience of being in the body. This meditation offers a moment of calm, whether you are pausing during the day or winding down before sleep, helping you feel more present, aware and connected. This meditation supports body awareness, grounding and focus.Chapters:00:00 – Introduction00:30 – Checking in with the body00:58 – The bell01:30 – Noticing how you sit02:30 – Accepting the reality of sitting02:40 – Points of contact03:50 – Awareness of the hands04:15 – Weight of the arms04:35 – Subtle sensations in the palms05:40 – Sensations in the fingers06:11 – Moving awareness through the fingers06:30 – Contact between the fingers06:50 – Anchoring in sensation07:10 – Awareness through the arms09:15 – Moving to the centre of the chest10:00 – Subtle sensations in the chest10:50 – Returning to a single point11:30 – Noticing changes in awareness11:50 – Gratitude for the body12:04 – Closing bell
193. Meditation on the Natural World: The Wisdom of Birds
12:33||Ep. 193In this guided Christian meditation, Brother Richard continues his Meditations on the Natural World series by reflecting on the wisdom of birds and the spiritual lessons they offer.Drawing on the ancient Christian contemplative tradition—especially the wisdom of the early Desert Fathers and the Franciscan way of seeing creation—this meditation invites us to observe the birds of the air as teachers of faith, freedom, trust and community. From the fledgling learning to fly, to migrating swallows, soaring eagles and silent owls, each reveals something about our own spiritual journey. As we contemplate the beauty and purpose of creation, we are reminded that the natural world is more than something to admire—it is a living scripture that can deepen our awareness of God's presence and transform the way we live.Whether you're seeking peace, relief from stress and anxiety, or a deeper appreciation of God's presence in creation, this meditation offers a gentle path into stillness, gratitude and contemplative prayer.Perfect for daily Christian meditation, mindful prayer, relaxation, preparing for restful sleep, or reconnecting with the beauty of the natural world.Chapters00:00 – Introduction: Learning from the birds 01:23 – Opening bell 01:41 – Settling into stillness 03:19 – The sky filled with birds 04:55 – Trusting like the fledgling 06:04 – The wisdom of migration 07:31 – Community and the flight of birds 09:07 – Solitude, wisdom and the eagle's vision 10:34 – The nest: creating space for new life 11:15 – Resolution for the day 11:39 – Closing bell
