Audax explained | All you need to know about the self-supported, long-distance cycling discipline

•

In today’s episode of the BikeRadar podcast, digital writer Jack Evans and technical writer Oscar Huckle are joined by long-distance cycling doyenne Eleanor Jaskowska.

Eleanor is an expert randonneur, having completed the 1,200km Paris-Brest-Paris audax on a fixed-gear bike in 2019. She is also the founder of the School of Rocks, a women-led off-road cycling community.

Oscar recently rode a 300km overnighter, so both are well-equipped to tell you all you need to know about audax.

After explaining what an audax is and how to enter an event, Jack, Oscar and Eleanor chat randonneur awards, brevet cards and ‘audax hotels’.

Eleanor and Oscar share their recommendations on routes, packing, nutrition and hydration. They also discuss tech and bike setups. Eleanor suggests how to prepare for an epic ride such as the 1,000km Mille Cymru audax she completed in preparation for Paris-Brest-Paris.

Although audaxes can be arduous, Eleanor urges you to try out what she believes is an unmissable cycling experience.

    28:17|
Thanks to Feedback Sports for sponsoring this podcast https://feedbacksports.com/ In this week’s episode of the BikeRadar podcast, Simon and Warren are back to digest the biggest cycling tech stories of the week. First up was Wednesday’s news that Fran Millar has stepped down as CEO of Rapha with immediate effect, after just two years at the helm. Following that, Simon quizzes Warren on his recent review of Newmen’s new Streem G.62 aero gravel wheels, which feature super-deep, and super-wide, aero rims. Are extreme wheels like this just for pro racers or are they suitable for punters too? As always, Warren’s got plenty of thoughts to share from his testing. Then, in this week’s news in brief, the duo cover the UCI’s recently announced review of its infamous Lugano Charter, and what rules they’d change if they were in charge of cycling. Simon and Warren also discuss Castelli’s recently updated Gabba and Perfetto jackets, and whether the iconic foul weather jacket fits into their cycling wardrobes. Lastly, they finish up with Specialized’s latest special edition bike – a £12,999 / $14,999, limited edition replica of Remco Evenepoel’s Gold S-Works Tarmac SL9. Should everyday riders be buying Olympic gold medal-themed bikes? Simon’s not so sure… Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
