6. LGBTQIA+: Joy and Coming Out with Charlie Craggs and Ryan Lanji
33:10||Season 1, Ep. 6In this episode we explore coming out and queer identity with Ryan Lanji and Charlie Craggs. Ryan Lanji is an art and fashion curator, winner of NETFLIX’S reality series ‘The Big Flower Fight’ and host of the upcoming BBC THREE series ’The Big Proud Party Agency'. Lanji is the founder of the queer South Asian movement HUNGAMA and NDY (Not Dead Yet) which centres POC Non Binary and Trans folk in premium gym spaces paired with East London’s best queer club nights. Charlie Craggs is a broadcaster, author and activist. Her book ‘To My Trans Sisters’ was published in 2017, she is the host of BBC’s Transitioning Teens and the founder of Nail Transphobia which she has been running for almost 10 years. She is regarded as one of the most influential figures in the LGBTQIA+ community and regularly appears on TV and radio. Charlie and Ryan, who are friends in their own right, have a frank and honest conversation of their coming out (or rather coming ‘in’) stories, dish out advice for other young LGBTQIA+ folk who want to find their community, and dismantle tired arguments levelled against trans people by the media. Char Bailey is a community campaigner, writer, model and content creator raising awareness about autism. She is head of education and well-being for Birmingham Pride, education officer for UKBP and features writer at Diva Magazine. She’s also a well-being practitioner and presenter. Laura Coryton led the successful UK petition to end tampon tax, the sexist tax levy applied to all period products, which gained over 318,000 signatures and changed UK law in 2020. Her campaign is also set to change European law in 2022. She launched her social enterprise, Sex Ed Matters, in 2019, which delivers empowering Relationship and Sex Education workshops to UK schools and universities, for which she gained Number 10 Downing Street's 'Points of Light' award in 2022. Laura released her first book, 'Speak Up!', a campaign guide for rebel girls, in 2019.Kenny Ethan Jones is a London based trans advocate who creates educational content about inclusivity, positivity and also his daily life. Kenny engages in open and respectful conversations on menstruation, body politics, mental health, and intimacy. Kenny is well known for being the first trans man to be featured on a period ad, and he has appeared on TV such as Channel 4’s ‘Genderquake’ and ‘Trans Kids: It’s Time to Talk’. Kenny is also a mentor within the LGBTQIA+ community. In this episode, Kenny discusses his first experience with periods, how they changed during his transition, and how there is still so much work to be done to create inclusive products, advertising and language within the sanitary industry which includes all people who menstruate. Karen Hobbs, a stand-up comedian became the nation’s (self-appointed) cervical cancer sweetheart after she was diagnosed with the disease at 24. Spreading the message about gynaecological health as widely as possible and, somehow, with humour, she has written articles for The Independent, The Huffington Post, iPaper, Glamour and The Telegraph. Karen has been interviewed by BBC Radio 1, Radio 4 Woman's Hour, Radio 5 Live, Sky News, BBC News, ITV News, London Live and The Evening Standard, taking every opportunity to squash the stigma that surrounds having a disease in between your legs. In this episode, Dr Anita goes through the exact process of a smear test, what the test is actually for, and how to prepare for it. We also discuss what to do if you get an abnormal result and Karen shares her own experience of being diagnosed including what her symptoms were.
