Kids are twice as likely to be hit by a car on Halloween, safety experts warn

Halloween Safety: Protecting Kids from Car Accidents
As Halloween approaches, Central Texas faces a grim reality: children are twice as likely to be hit by a car on this spooky night compared to any other day. Kids and Car Safety, a national nonprofit, warns parents and caregivers about the risks, especially for children under five and those up to twelve who need adult supervision.
The main culprit? Low lighting and poor visibility. Kids might assume drivers can see them, but dark costumes or masks can block vision. The solution? Dress children in reflective clothing, add reflective gear to costumes and bags, and use light and bright colors. Glow sticks or flashlights are also helpful.
Stick to sidewalks, avoid masks covering faces, and use walking paths if available. Drivers should stay home if possible, drive slower, avoid distractions, and be prepared for children darting into the street. Report unsafe or impaired drivers to law enforcement. Every precaution counts to ensure a safe Halloween for all.
