LAS Art Foundation: Sensing Quantum
53:01|We recorded this episode at LAS Art Foundation offices in Berlin to talk about the exhibition WE FELT A STAR DYING by Laure Prouvost, a newly commissioned art installation at Kraftwerk Berlin that explores quantum phenomena and their sensitivity to cosmic and planetary forces. This work was is part of the LAS Sensing Quantum programme, which explores the implications and possibilities of quantum technologies through new commissions with artists and composers, a symposium, a publication and an ongoing learning programme. Together these efforts bring together artists, scientists, thinkers and the public to engage with this evolving field. We were thrilled to be joined by Zoe Büchtemann from the curatorial team for this conversation spanning quantum theory, the natural world, the role of chance and spontaneity in artistic development, and... chicken feathers!A century ago, quantum physics revealed that, at the smallest scales, we cannot predict everything about how matter behaves. Particles can exist in multiple states at once, become linked, or even pass through energy barriers. Today, these ideas are the foundation of a number of quantum technologies, which some predict will transform our world in the next five years. WE FELT A STAR DYING is a multi-sensory and immersive environment, including video and sound developed with a quantum computer, as well scent and sculptural elements tuned to quantum phenomenaHosted by Dr Amelia McConville & Dr Autumn BrownProduction & Music by Daniel Tatlow-DevallyRead more about LAS and Sensing Quantum here.Further reading: 'How Art Went Quantum' by Günseli Yalcinkaya for ArtReview.www.artsciencesalon.orgInstagram: @artplussciencesalon
Ariane Koek Interview | The ART+SCIENCE SALON
59:40|Ariane Koek is a world leader in the field of science and art. The initiator and Founding Director of Arts at CERN (2009-2015), she is a change maker, visionary, strategist, creative force, inspirational speaker, and policy maker. We were so delighted to welcome her to the Salon to discuss her career trajectory, creative inspiration, cultural collisions, scientific ideas as springboards to the imagination, and… what makes you weird? Her recent address to the European Commission has become a manifesto of sorts for us as we negotiate the shifting political contexts of knowledge production and advocate for the importance of the arts and science. The Art+Science Salon at Creative Brain Week 2024 | Part 2
28:58|Welcome to the Salon! In March 2024 we assumed the role of official podcasters of Creative Brain Week: a Global Brain Health Institute innovation at Trinity College Dublin, presented in association with Creative Aging International, the Jameel Arts & Health Lab, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and with support from Creative Ireland and the Atlantic Institute. In our second mini-episode and third podcast stemming from Creative Brain Week, we sat down with Robyn Landau of Kinda Studios, a neuroscience studio driving creative impact by using neuroaesthetic principles in design. We spoke about embodiment, designing for the mind, collaborating with DJ Jayda G, and “muscular bonding” and heard about Kinda Studios own podcast “Beyond Five Senses”. In this episode, we also sift through more insights from our Reflection Sessions co-hosted with Scottish Poetry Library’s Morag Anderson, and bond over the visual poetry of Ian Hamilton Finlay. The themes of Creative Brain Week 2024 were “Attention, Connection, & Love” and we discuss how the visual in and through poetry might capture, and speak to, all three of these elements.
