If you produce any kind of sports content within the media landscape of Mississippi, you’ve already heard the news of the 2025 Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class. A lot of hometown heroes fill the list- last episode’s guest, Mo Williams, included- but if you’ve paid attention to collegiate baseball in this state literally at all, you most certainly recognize one of those inductees. Scott Berry retired just last year after spending over 20 years on the coaching staff at the University of Southern Miss. For this episode, Lacey sits down with NBA Champion an Alabama Crimson Tide alum (Roll Tide!) Mo Williams, who is currently coaching the men's basketball team at Jackson State University. What was originally planned to be a simple convo about the year ahead and how he hopes his team will succeed instead turned into a very eye-opening conversation about how smaller division 1 athletic programs like JSU have to schedule and recruit. In honor of the Mississippi Braves recently wrapping up their final season in Pearl, we are revisiting one of the interviewees from our 2-part special on the M-Braves in season 1. Lacey sits down with one of the most prolific sports journalists in the state to discuss all things Baseball.Rick Cleveland, a native of Hattiesburg and resident of Jackson, has been Mississippi Today’s sports columnist since 2016. A graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi with a bachelor’s in journalism, Rick has worked for the Hattiesburg American, Monroe (La.) News Star World, Jackson Daily News and Clarion Ledger. He served four years as executive director of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame before joining Mississippi Today. His work as a syndicated columnist and celebrated sports writer has appeared in numerous magazines, periodicals and newspapers. Rick has been recognized 14 times as Mississippi Sports Writer of the Year and has been inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, the Hattiesburg Hall of Fame, the USM Alumni Hall of Fame and the Mississippi Press Association Hall of Fame.

You can go to just about any sports-savvy source to get an opinion on NIL, which athletes were permitted to legally use for profit in 2021. But we wanted to try something different and talk to someone that collected actual data! Dr. Brennan Berg, professor at the University of Mississippi, (Ole Miss) looked over legal documents and interviewed lawmakers to get the facts on the effects and legislation of NIL.
