S3 EP18: Nic Sampson

Today we welcome New Zealand actor and comedian Nic Sampson to the podcast for a chat about his time as a Power Ranger, how he blagged his way onto the red carpet with Tommy Lee Jones in Toronto and why the X-Files scared him into thinking he might burst into flames. We discuss our joint love of hotels, why discovering Alien life might not be in our interest, and why Nic refuses to buy his former costume on ebay.

    53:18|
Today we welcome Oscar and BAFTA-winning Sound mixer Tom Curley to the podcast for a chat about his work on Whiplash, Yellowstone, Documentary Now!, and CSI Vegas. Tom regales us with stories of guerrilla filming in Seoul with a renowned Korean film director, how he was once chased from a set by wild donkeys in Nevada, and being fooled into thinking overseas actors are American, only to find out their true identity once filming has wrapped. Tom explains how he dodged a bullet after Harvey Weinstein blanked him at the BAFTAs, how J.K. Simmons got out of wearing a mic during the filming of Whiplash, and his difficulty in stifling his laughter on the set of Documentary Now! We also discuss bonkers Japanese telly, why AI will most likely bring out the worst us, and how the invention of Television played a significant role in the rise of obesity. All music written and performed in this podcast by Steve Otis Gunn. Please buy my book 'You Shot My Dog and I Love You' available in all good book shops, online and directly.Podcast Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/tvtimespodTik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@tvtimespodYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@tvtimespodBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/steveotisgunn.bsky.socialFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/steveotisgunn.tvtimespodTom's Socials:Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/curleysound.bsky.socialInsta: https://www.instagram.com/tom_curley_cas/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/curleysoundIMDb: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1093577/
  • S3 EP24: Simon Donald

    57:39|
Today we welcome Simon Donald, co-founder of Viz to the podcast for a chat about his comic beginnings, his post-Viz stand-up career, moving to North London, and why Americans will never understand us. Simon also explains how swear words found their way into the English vernacular, and why class plays a pivotal role in how they have been policed ever since. We then chat about the various incarnations of Viz characters on the small screen, culminating in The Fat Slags movie, which was made without his, or anyone at Viz's involvement or approval. Hear the real-life story behind the inspiration for Sid the Sexist, why the 1960s Batman TV show contained such bizarre dialogue, and the last-minute change at Viz HQ that led to the creation of the hugely successful Roger's Profanasaurus. All music written and performed in this podcast by Steve Otis Gunn. Please buy my book 'You Shot My Dog and I Love You' available in all good book shops, online and directly.Podcast Socials:Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@tvtimespodYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@tvtimespodInsta: https://www.instagram.com/tvtimespodBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tvtimespod.bsky.socialSteve's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/steveotisgunnFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/steveotisgunn.antisocialSimon's Socials:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/simondonald.comedyYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@HimOffTheVizProduced by Steve Otis Gunn for Jilted Maggotwww.jiltedmaggot.com
  • S3 EP23: Graham Fellows

    53:41|
This week we welcome Graham Fellows, the man behind both Jilted John & John Shuttleworth, for a cheeky chinwag about his legendary career in music and television. Yamaha and Casio keyboards feature heavily in this chat, as does John's dog Kirsty. Throughout our conversation, Graham pokes fun while I try not to laugh, as we cover such meteoric subjects as; doorstep drinks deliveries in the 1970s, the possibility of John doing ASMR videos on TikTok, why podcasts should never be over-edited, and how a song lyric earned him an almost lifetime supply of Bounty bars. We chat about his appearances on 'Top of The Pops' as Jilted John, how that character was formed as a reaction to the punk singers of the time, and how after signing a publishing deal, he accidentally created John Shuttleworth on the same day. I explain how I nabbed a job selling Yamaha keyboards in Harrods, even though I couldn't play a note, while Graham divulges why his keyboards sometimes stop working on stage, leading to unplanned comic moments. We also cover his collaboration with Count Arthur, his appearances on the Leslie Grantham-helmed 'Paradise Club' and Jonathan Ross's Saturday Night Zoo, and why, as a kid, he would have loved to have hung out with The Monkees. All music written and performed in this podcast by Steve Otis Gunn.*Except 'My Wife Died in 1970' written by Graham FellowsPlease buy my book 'You Shot My Dog and I Love You' available in all good book shops, online and directly.Podcast Socials:Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@tvtimespodYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@tvtimespodInsta: https://www.instagram.com/tvtimespodBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tvtimespod.bsky.socialSteve's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/steveotisgunnFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/steveotisgunn.antisocialGraham & John's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/johnshuttlewrthX: https://x.com/johnshuttlewrthFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/johnshuttlewrth/?locale=en_GBYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCk1GY2WmzYUSZaowoYdvYdgProduced by Steve Otis Gunn for Jilted Maggotwww.jiltedmaggot.com
  • S3 EP22: Ed Patrick

    37:46|
Today we welcome comedian, author and anaesthetist Ed Patrick to the podcast for a chat about his recent appearance on 'Have I Got News For You', the changing habits of watching telly, and why the idea of being on 'Traitors' makes him anxious. Ed explains how he launched his own podcast 'Comedians Surgery' after a late night gig in Oxford, and how that created a safe space for comedians to talk openly, which leads me to explain how I ended up having a vasectomy on my birthday in the middle of a pandemic. We also discuss the importance of sleep, the reason why Prince didn't have any clocks in his house, and the rather bizarre TV career of Greg James. All music written and performed in this podcast by Steve Otis Gunn. Please buy my book 'You Shot My Dog and I Love You' available in all good book shops, online and directly.Podcast Socials:Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@tvtimespodYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@tvtimespodInsta: https://www.instagram.com/tvtimespodBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tvtimespod.bsky.socialSteve's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/steveotisgunnFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/steveotisgunn.antisocialEd's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/edpatrickcomedyFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/edpatrickcomedyProduced by Steve Otis Gunn for Jilted Maggotwww.jiltedmaggot.com
  • S3 EP21: TV Round Up of 2024 with Paul Critoph

    58:56|
He's back yet again! Friend of the podcast Paul Critoph returns and attempts to review the TV of 2024, whilst I accept impromptu Christmas deliveries via my front door. Listen as we discuss Paul's role playing Santa at a secret undisclosed location, the ever changing face of John Mulaney, and divorcing reality from the art of 'Baby Reindeer'. Gasp as we both realise we know Shakin' Steven's drummer, while I admit to watching an entire scheduled evening of Saturday night light-entertainment. Paul then tries to convince me to watch Jilly Cooper's 'Rivals' while I explain the bizarre concept of the Stephen Mangan led 'Fortune Hotel'. We also rile against adverts infiltrating the streaming market, why Season 3 of 'The Bear' took the absolute piss, and why neither of us can abide Strictly. All music written and performed in this podcast by Steve Otis Gunn. Please buy my book 'You Shot My Dog and I Love You' available in all good book shops, online and directly.Podcast Socials:Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@tvtimespodInsta: https://www.instagram.com/tvtimespodYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@tvtimespodTwitter: https://twitter.com/tvtimespodSteve's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/steveotisgunnTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/steveotisgunnFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/steveotisgunn.antisocialPaul's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/paulcritophTwitter: https://twitter.com/PaulCritophFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/paul.critophProduced by Steve Otis Gunn for Jilted Maggotwww.jiltedmaggot.com
  • S3 EP20: Bobby Davro

    31:34|
Today as a Christmas treat, we welcome all round entertainer Bobby Davro to the podcast for a chat about his TV career and his subsequent pantomime appearances, most notably with the legendary Mickey Rooney in Milton Keynes. Find out which pop star jumped out of a wardrobe while Bobby was impersonating him, who's annoying catchphrase he helped to cultivate, and why he could never be a contestant on I'm a Celebrity'. Hear the real story of how Bobby was badly injured filming a BBC game show, why he hated appearing on 'Dancing on Ice', and which other comedian he is often mistaken for. We also chat about the joy of finding old adverts within YouTube clips and how he got to impersonate the cast of 'Rainbow' to their actual faces. All music written and performed in this podcast by Steve Otis GunnPlease buy my book 'You Shot My Dog and I Love You' available in all good book shops, online and directly.Podcast Socials:Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@tvtimespodInsta: https://www.instagram.com/tvtimespodYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@tvtimespodTwitter: https://twitter.com/tvtimespodSteve's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/steveotisgunnTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/steveotisgunnFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/steveotisgunn.antisocialBobby's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/bobbydavro1Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/p/Bobby-Davro-61551680181359Produced by Steve Otis Gunn for Jilted Maggotwww.jiltedmaggot.com
  • S3 EP19: Stephen Curry

    59:43|
Today we welcome Australian actor Stephen Curry to the podcast for a chinwag about his varied career in TV and film, most notably his outstanding performance in 'Hounds of Love' and as King Yakan in Marvel's 'Thor: Love and Thunder'. We discuss the power of wigs and hair dye, rudeness dressed up as a well-meaning compliment, and why he doesn't quite understand the appeal of 'Taskmaster'. Stephen then explains what it's really like to shoot in remote locations, why some movies should only be watched once, and why he has only good things to say about his 'Spreadsheet' co-star Katherine Parkinson. He then reminds me of his turn as a camera-toting tourist in the Greg McLean Outback Horror film 'Rogue', before explaining how he somehow managed to play three different characters in 'Neighbours' without anyone noticing. We end by squeezing in a few cheeky format questions while Stephen explains how he managed to secure a lifetime supply of potato chips. • S3 EP17: Stuart Laws

    53:31|
Today we welcome the multi-talented comedian and director Stuart Laws to the podcast for a chat about his passion for flipping beer mats, the confines of a performer's comedic uniform, and why many stand-up comics tend to look alike. Stuart explains how he's adapted his onstage persona since being diagnosed with Autism and how that discovery has helped him understand the emotions that neurodiverse audience members may be suppressing during his own shows. Stuart also explains how he likes to nurture upcoming talent through his production company 'Turtle Canyon Media' while weighing up the pros and cons of judging your own successes against that of your peers.
