Revolutionary Open Licensing Standard: RSL 1.0 Empowers Content Creators
The podcast episode introduces a groundbreaking open licensing standard, Really Simple Licensing (RSL) 1.0, designed to help content creators monetize their work when AI companies use it online. RSL expands on the existing robots.txt file, allowing publishers to set rules for web crawlers and AI scrapers. Major internet infrastructure providers now support RSL, enabling them to block non-paying AI crawlers.
A key feature of RSL 1.0 is the ability for publishers to block their content from AI-powered search features like Googles AI Mode while remaining visible in regular search results. Over 1,500 media organizations and brands, including The Associated Press, Vox Media, and The Guardian, now support RSL, making it the recognized standard for communicating content usage by AI systems.
