An interview conducted outside on an unusually warm winter day. This a refreshingly slower-paced interview on the side of a mountain with some amazing views.Luke is Chicken Daddy. He shows me around his homemade chicken coop with high spirit and introduces me to his four chickens. Let's go visit a chicken coop surrounded by pinon trees and rock outcroppings in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains!

One day, Luke decided he wanted to raise chickens. So, he built a coop, got some chickens, got some feed, and now he never has to buy eggs again! Could it be that easy?Does Luke worry about his chickens while he's reclined in a chair with his feet warming by the fire and it's zero degrees outside? Sure, his chickens are inside a coop but isn't it stressful for them while foxes and racoons investigate the coop at 2AM, looking for a way in? What about really hot days? What could cause them to get sick or contract a disease?Well, on a warm day in December, I finally satisfied all of my curiosities about raising chickens. I visited the self-proclaimed Chicken Daddy's house, located on a quiet hillside with THE MOST spectacular view of Colorado Springs I have ever seen while standing next to a chicken coop.Episode posts March 5.

I once heard the answer to a question asked of an artist that I think, at this point, I will never forget. The question was, why do you create? The answer: I create to feel closer with myself. That answer gave me pause to realize that while artists are creating, they are connecting with themselves in ways that, possibly, only artists understand. That’s profound to me. I get to talk about that today with Calvin Hoff.Calvin is a life-long Californian who, in his retirement, pursued his passion to create collage art. He collects old magazines, and carefully dissects them to create new, beautiful imageries. Abby departed her position as conductor/engineer after two years in 2023 and Mel after 18 years in 2015.Although they are no longer employed as train engineers, Abby and Mel come together today to talk shop about their experiences driving trains for the same railway, The Pikes Peak Cog Railway, located in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. A 30ton train driving nine miles to the top of a 14,000-foot mountain, with grades as steep as 25%, is an engineering feat for the ages. The vision of such a rail line was had in 1888 after business owner Zalmon Simmons made the journey to the summit of Pikes Peak by way of mule.The railway was subsequently built and opened for business in 1891, having operated every year until the end of 2017 when the railway received a long overdue renovation. Re-opening in 2021, it continues to draw thousands of visitors to its operation every year.
