Need board support? Dominique Hes says getting outside support is a game changer

Ep. 253

Today on the Take on Board podcast, I’m speaking with Dr. Dominique Hes about engaging external company secretary services to support a board.

Dominique is the Chair of Greenfleet and was formerly on the boards of Living Futures Institute of Australia (LFIA), Trust for Nature in Victoria.

Dominique has a Science Degree, Engineering Degree, PhD in Architecture and a Cert in Governance. She was born in south Africa of Dutch Parents, lived in Brazil until 1982 then moved to Australia.

She’s written a bunch of books – including award winning Designing for Hope: pathways to regenerative sustainability. Given you're listening to this, you might also want to know that there’s a podcast on her latest book which I am working on based on the history of Newport Lakes can be found here.

She’s an enthusiastic member of the Take on Board community having been to loads of events and programs and she’s been on the pod already not once, not twice but three times – and on some of the most listened to episodes as we did on air strategy sessions about doing your board resume, preparing for a board interview and then preparing to join the board.

Dominique's external board and CoSec services brief:

1. Your organisational information – ABN, Charity Status, strategy, vision, etc

2. Your board information – meetings, how long for, committees, governance etc. (in follow up emails sending an example agenda and other information is useful)

3. Outline of key things you need help with:

- Minutes, Agendas, Papers

- Board workshop or Risk review

- Compliance review and reporting

- Alignment of board and committee processes

- Board needs

- Board exec liaison

  • 258. The Royal Commission we should have? The 2013 Essendon Football Club supplements scandal (Rebroadcast from The Westminster Tradition)

    36:26
This week on the Take on Board podcast, I am sharing an episode from The Westminster Tradition, a podcast I love and listen to regularly. I was listening to one of their episodes from April 2024 and thought, 'I have to share all this governance goodness with the Take on Board Community'. So I reached out to the hosts of The Westminster Tradition and they gave me the go-ahead. So this week, that's what we're doing._____“Lack of good governance is why good people did bad things at Essendon Football Club”. So says Lindsay Tanner, former Minister for Finance, and President of the Essendon Football Club from 2015.In this mini-series, Caroline tries to convince us there are lessons for public servants from the Essendon Football Club supplement scandal in 2013.In this episode, we talk about what happened in Essendon itself. The dangers of charismatic new leaders, new brooms through an organisation, and a failure to take controls and risk management seriously.Referenced in this episode:• Lindsay Tanner ‘Governance lessons from the Essendon scandal’• The Long Haul podcast, Episode Two: Inside the Blackest Day• Ziggy Switkowski report into failures of governance at Essendon Football Club• Dr Bruce Reid letter to Essendon Football Club about his concerns about the supplement regimeIntro grab is Lindsay Tanner, Governance lessons from the Essendon scandal.Outro grab is Nathan Lovett-Murray and Emma Murray, The Long Haul podcast, Episode Two: Inside the Blackest Day.Upcoming TOB EventsAll eventsYou might want to:Join the Take on Board Facebook communityJoin the Take on Board LinkedIn communityFollow along on TwitterWork with meJoin the Take on Board: Kickstarter group programJoin the Take on Board: Accelerator group programFind out more about meContact me
  • 257. Helga goes Solo: Making Space for S.P.A.C.E

    15:31
This week on the Take on Board podcast, I am making space for S.P.A.C.E...Many of you will know from my first Ideas to Action this year that my word for 2024 is ‘space’. For me, it was about ‘leaving space in the cup’. Space to grow and learn. Space to be.   Like water in a stream moving around rocks and trees, space in the cup will mean I’m feeling in flow, at ease.    The practical things I put in place to help me leave space were to use Pomodoro method for productivity and to engage a coach for accountability.  And because I love an acronym... I am taking my 2023 R.S.V.P and making some S.P.A.C.E.
