11. 11. Pigeon religion. With Tina Piña a.k.a. Mother Pigeon.
43:55||Ep. 11Pigeons, pigeons, PIGEONS! Welcome to 2021! Hopefully, the wackiness of this episode will be enough to distract you from current events. Mother Pigeon is a NYC performance artist who can often be found at Union Square feeding live pigeons and selling felt ones. She has been called “a beautiful witch”, to which I wholeheartedly agree. Mother Pigeon may not be a granny per se, but she definitely radiates strong granny energy, and that’s enough for me (plus it’s my podcast and I do what I want 😊). We talk about the pros and cons of being a performance artist in New York City, how crafting impacts her lifestyle, Nikola Tesla and his love for pigeons, Tina’s secret seed mix (made by the Amish), illegal pigeon netting, and her recently “viral” pandemic art piece which included masked rats with a sign saying “Eww Run! Humans are spreading disease!”. Tina and her husband also shared one of their puppet shows (which you can watch on my Instagram!) and music from their upcoming album, which I absolutely loved and can’t get out of my head. Thanks again to Mother Pigeon for inviting me into her studio for this (socially distanced) interview, it was very… coo-l. 10. 10. A cow, 50 sheep, and two children! With my grandma Marjolaine.
57:38||Ep. 10In this tumultuous holiday season, who better to interview than my own grandma! This episode sort of serves as a part two to episode 2 where I interviewed my grandpa, so you might want to listen to that first. Oma Marjolaine was born in a truck in the Netherlands during WWII. She hitchhiked her way to the South of France at 18 and never turned back! When she joined a hippie commune she had to learn how to grow her own vegetables, mill grain, raise sheep, tan hides, make cheese, spin yarn, and everything in between. She even had to send telegrams back in the day when she didn’t have a phone on her farm. Basically, she was homesteading before it was cool. We talk about her travels around the world, her friendship with the late Diana Ross, and visiting America for the first time. Pick the coziest bale of hay in the barn and gather round for this joyous episode of SYGNT that might just convince you to go live on a farm in the mountains... which honestly doesn’t sound half bad right now. This was just a year after the “Little Rock Nine” had to be escorted to school by federal troops thanks to Brown vs. the Board of Education supreme court ruling. We discuss the parallels with today’s Black Lives Matter movement and how we hope for change. We also get into her life as a missionary on the Navajo reservation, her career as a psychologist (she is still working at 77!) and the psychology of God and our parents.
