Although colonialism in Africa is believed to be in the past, its legacy lives on in the present through the tension and conflicts evident between those tribes of native Africans that were thrust together under British rule. The rise of Nationalism after World War 2 and the path towards gaining independence was a difficult process for native Africans. However, this created more challenges due to the divisions that existed due to language, customs and culture as well as social and economic backgrounds.
In this podcast episode, Tracy DW explores the country of Zimbabwe (formerly known as the British colony of ‘Rhodesia’) as an example of how these divisions played out during the 1960s and 70s. The political parties of ZANU and ZAPU may have practiced separate approaches to undermine the Rhodesian government but they eventually came together to achieve a common goal.
