S3E8: KINDRED (ENCORE)

Season 3, Ep. 8

We're doing an encore because let time get away from us -- but at least we were not unwillingly unwittingly transported to the antebellum south like Butler's heroine. Butler uses the bones of a science fiction story to explore the reverberations of slavery through our history and Black people's bodies. Dan says of all the books we've read for the podcast, this is the one he still thinks about the most. FX's adaptation debuted this year to good reviews but scant attention and was not renewed for a second season, but the book is worth revisiting again and again. Compare and contrast to last week's discussion of The Underground Railroad! There's IR and very much a critique of capitalism in this book.

  • ANIMAL FARM

    01:01:33||Season 6
    Ana and Dan must work harder. If you haven't read this short novel or it's been awhile, this is your sign to spend an afternoon with Orwell's lively parable. The writing is crisp, even if fans have scrambled what Orwell actually meant.There is a bit of IR. Some critiques of capitalism, too.
  • GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 1

  • THE RUNNING MAN (2025)

    56:25||Season 6
    A movie can always be improved by Glen Powell appearing nude, but can it be saved? This is the hypothetical that Edgar Wright's remake of The Running Man attempts to answer.This movie has Arnoldbucks, futurist telenovelas, a podcast that might save the world (if not America), a delusional ending (or is it?), hot dogs (not Glen Powell's!) and, yes, some IR.
  • PLURIBUS

    01:32:26||Season 6
    Ana and Dan will skip the milk, thanks.Is Pluribus about AI? Is it about the white savior complex, or loneliness in post-capitalist society? The pandemic? Ethical altruism? Maybe... art? It's gorgeous and inscrutable, much like your long-absent hosts.Glad to be back.(This was supposed to come out before the streak of Running Man episodes we did, lol.)
