16. Episode 16 - Brick
01:44:26||Ep. 16We're building up to discussing Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery and this week Nick's suggested we take a look at Rian Johnson's first film, I think it's the first film(?), Brick. How can I describe Brick? Have you ever thought about being a teenager...but then been like, "Yo...what if everything was black and white and I was a detective and I had to solve a murder and the Vice Principle was the cops?" Well, other than the black and white thing...that's this film! Will it play a role in how we view the new Knives Out film? Only one way to find out!Somewhere on the Screen is a part of the Somewhere family of podcasts. Episode 15 - Murder on the Orient Express (1974)
01:21:06|We're starting our next cycle with a classic! It's time for Sidney Lumet's classic take on Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express. Chris took a wild guess in trying to find an early version of a detective mystery (definitely not early) which he hoped might inform about Rian Johnson's thoughts on the upcoming Knives Out film (nailed it here). Nick said he'd seen this movie a million times only to later admit he'd watched the 2017 version and never heard of Sidney Lumet. Will they argue? Planning Cycle 4
30:50|We're back with another planning episode! This time around we're going to be looking into one of those awesome murder mysteries with Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. Man these movies are good! I can't wait to see it. We'll be waiting to discuss it until the film is out on Netflix on December 12th so we'll have some time to get prepped. Listen in for more about why we're picking them but for this cycle we'll be discussing:Murder on the Orient Express (1974)Brick(the other Knives out films...maybe...probably?)Somewhere on the Screen is a part of the Somewhere family of podcasts. 14. Episode 14: Frankenstein (2025)
01:48:27||Ep. 14It's out and we've watched it! Netflix has finally launched our long awaited Frankenstein film, directed by Guillermo del Toro so we're gonna talk about it!With out this week is a special guest! We're joined by film maker Eriq Ortiz, noted fan of the director and our "person who actually did the homework" by reading the book. He's an amazing addition for this episode as we look at the beautiful techniques and cinematography that went into the movie. Oh, and Nick and Chris are both here as well.Somewhere on the Screen is a part of the Somewhere family of podcasts. Episode 13: Frankenstein (1931) & Young Frankenstein
01:38:36|We're talking about the original Frankenstein this week! del Toro has been out talking about this was his big inspiration for...everything! With this, at the very least, being the inspiration for his new Frankenstein movie we figured we'd take a look and see what all the hub bub was about. Oh! Also...Chris is tired of spooky crap so he demanded we watch Young Frankenstein. Funny! Comedy! Happiness!!!We're watching both! You can find Frankenstein (1931) on Prime Video but if you're looking for Young Frankenstein you may need to do your own bit of science to bring it back from the dead cause that thing isn't streaming anywhere. We only found it through a bit of string pulling on a person's Plex account that we know. But it's fun!On to the shows and come back next week for our discussion of del Toro's Frankenstein!Somewhere on the Screen is a part of the Somewhere family of podcasts. 12. Episode 12 - Mary Shelley's Frankenstein
01:48:40||Ep. 12This week we're taking a deep dive into Nick's childhood with a viewing of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein! This is a film Nick saw on TNT when he was young that stuck with him and was clearly formative in his views on monster movies and horror. Will it hold up? More importantly, what does it tell us about cinema views the pitfalls of literary horror? Also...did Chris watch this thing? I'm not sure he watched it!Somewhere on the Screen is a part of the Somewhere family of podcasts. 11. Episode 11 - The Shape of Water
01:46:14||Ep. 11It's on to our first episode for Cycle 3! As we build up to discussing Guillermo del Toro's upcoming Frankenstien we thought we'd discuss his previous monster movie...The Shape of Water. I'm not even going to hide my enthusiasm for this film -- it's great. We both thought so. But why? Planning Cycle 3
25:07|We're back with a planning episode! If you've never heard one of these before, we've always gated this behind the paywall of our Patreon (patreon.com/somewhereonthescreen) but with our new plans moving forward, these will be up for everyone! Hooray! On this bonus episode we talk about the new cycle and what we're going to cover with a bit of "why" involved. If you're one of those "I don't know want to know before I hear it!" don't read any further but if you're just here to know what you need to study...This cycle we're going to be covering the new Frankenstein film by Guillermo del Toro! del Toro is an amazing director (and quietly directed the best superhero film evey made) so we thought we'd check it out.To get you ready though, we're also going to discuss:1) The Shape of Water - Guillermo del Toro's phenomenal Oscar-winning film which is pretty clearly a precursor to this film.2.) Mary Shelly's Frankenstien - The Frankenstien film which is most people's touchstone when thinking of Frankenstien on the big screen.3.) A double feature!!! Frankenstien (1931)/The Bride of Frankenstien -- we wanted to throw in a comedy (okay...Chris demanded we throw in a comedy) but apparently you need to watch the original to understand the jokes...so that's what we're gonna do!Thanks for sticking with us and we can't wait to be back in your ears with more amazing conversations about what's Somewhere on the Screen!Somewhere on the Screen is a part of the Somewhere family of podcasts. Future of the Show
07:36|Hey! We finally figured it out! Thank you so much for bearing with us as we worked to figure out exactly how we wanted to move forward and whether we wanted to move forward. Having Joe leave us was sad...wait, like "leave us" as in the show -- he's still alive. We talk. He just isn't recording at 1am with us any more. Point is, it was sad but we've found a way I think we can still continue and make it work.Take a listen to all the things here and let us know what you think. If you have thoughts you'd like to share with us you can send them to somewhereonthescreen@gmail.com
