41. SLP CORNER: Behaviour Challenges, Functional Communication and Replacement Behaviours with Two BCBAs
*PSA: Around 6:24 audio cuts out due to poor internet connection! It only lasts a few seconds.
This week’s return guests are Amanda and Danielle from Navigating Behaviour Change.
Amanda is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and a Nationally Certified School Psychologist and Danielle is a Special Education Teacher Consultant and Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Together Amanda and Danielle are co-owners of Navigating Behavior Change. They provide resources, professional development, and consultation on research and evidence-based strategies to teach and promote generalization of socially appropriate behaviors. Given Amanda and Danielle’s diverse professional background, Navigating Behavior Change strives to provide supports to not only teachers, but also school psychologists, administrators, and other related service providers.
We cover the following and more:
1. When considering the function of challenging behaviors, how do BCBA's view the role of communication?
2. How do BCBA's use the principles of behavior to teach, practice, and reinforce functional communication skills?
3. In what ways do you effectively collaborate with a SLP to improve functional communication? Is there overlap?
4. In the school setting, what barriers do you often encounter in regard to improving a student's ability to communicate their wants and needs?
