Sick of Being Sick

Cancer Chats w/ Friends Ep:02 Lauren Stein

Season 1, Ep. 11

Such a big part of my cancer journey so far has been the support of my friends (who live all over the world). To create transparency for fellow cancer patients and supporting friends we have created a mini-series where I have candid conversations with my friends about their experiences of processing my diagnosis with or without me. These episodes will take you on an emotional ride of genuine discussions about life, fear, mortality, and love.

In this episode, I talk to my friend Lauren Stein, who has been by my side through some of the toughest moments in my adult life including this one. She has doctor parents which made her experience quite unique by having a realistic version of the Google shock at home. Thank you for sharing your story, I love you.

Like many of the previous episodes, she shares her experience with processing a close friend's cancer diagnosis. In this episode talk a lot about communicating and learning to be there for one another, this is actually a live conversation of us working through differences on how we both approached the friendship during the first couple of months of my diagnosis, and I'm grateful to Shrey for being open and honest about her feelings. We have learned that we need to be more communicative with one another and are now (3 months post recording) in a healthier friendship thanks to conversations like this one, and a recent visit from her to Spain :) Thank you for sharing your story, I love you.Follow us @sick.of.being.sick.podcast on Instagram!Support the growth of the show: https://supporter.acast.com/sick-of-being-sick (all funds will go to production)To submit your story to join the podcast, or a letter to be read on the podcast please email podcast@rociogalan.com.

Kendall and I met through work and have built a friendship from learning how to be more open with one another through our differences. Her experience with my diagnosis came as a shock to her just like the rest of us, however, she has been actively there to talk even when I had no words to share. We became friends through work, and through countless hours of long projects and nights out we have created a relationship like siblings. Catty has been a key pillar in my life to keep me grounded, stoic, and realistic. Also, personal skills have come to life through this chapter of my life. His experience with my diagnosis was not an easy one as he was also facing similar news from a close family member. • 9. Ep. 09: Managing A Terminal Diagnosis

    01:07:47||Season 1, Ep. 9
    Emily has been one of my first "online" cancer friends and she has been an inspiration to watch fight her way through cancer. In this episode, Emily talks about her cancer journey and what it is like to receive the scariest news for anyone in the cancer community. We also talk about cancer as a young adult, in the topics of dating, college, and work.  About Emily:Emily is a 28 year old Canadian who loves to binge read books, and will always laugh at a dad joke! She has endured an Ewing sarcoma diagnosis three times since turning 20, and acquired a physical disability in her right arm after a surgery to remove a tumour in her humerus. For as long as she can remember, she has always had a notebook where she would create stories or write poems, and she has used this passion to write about her experience with cancer and disability in the hopes of helping others.    Follow us @sick.of.being.sick.podcast on Instagram!Support the growth of the show: https://supporter.acast.com/sick-of-being-sick (all funds will go to production)To submit your story to join the podcast, or a letter to be read on the podcast please email podcast@rociogalan.com. Emily's info:Emily's InstagramEmily's TikTokEmily's Blog
  • 8. Ep. 08: I Turned 27! This Is What I'm Taking With Me For The Next Year

    17:44||Season 1, Ep. 8
    As I listened back to this episode to write a description I could only think of the word PROGRESS. In this episode, you can hear in my voice how much stronger I am (physically and mentally) and how I have gotten to a place of somewhat acceptance of what I am leaving. But more than anything you hear my hunger to fight, live, and make the most out of every second, minute, and day. A big reason for the strength behind this episode and when I recorded was because my family and my friends (from all over the world) came together for my birthday to celebrate life, and I think that has fueled me for the next few months to come. Thank you to everyone who came, I love you. 01:01:18||Season 1, Ep. 7
    Leigh shares with me her experience of going through a double diagnosis of cancer in the last few years and as she says “white knuckled” her way through them. She went on with life avoiding facing the emotions that come with a diagnosis as such. She is now in the process of working through those emotions and as part of her work she challenged herself to speak about it on the podcast with me.About Leigh George:Leigh is the founder of Freedom, a strategic branding and marketing un-agency. For over 20 years, she has helped marketing teams eliminate the noise, gain clarity, build consensus, and develop actionable strategies to reach and persuade customers. Before launching her own company, Leigh led branding and content marketing at a health non-profit and was VP at Ogilvy. Leigh has a Ph.D. in branding – one of the only people in the country with that distinction.She is a two-time cancer survivor. In 2017, she was diagnosed with Stage 2, HER2-positive breast cancer. Three years later, in 2021, she was diagnosed with Stage 0 Melanoma. Follow us @sick.of.being.sick.podcast on Instagram!Support the growth of the show: https://supporter.acast.com/sick-of-being-sick (all funds will go to production)To submit your story to join the podcast, or a letter to be read on the podcast please email podcast@rociogalan.com.Leigh's info:Leigh's InstagramLeigh’s Twitterleighgeorge@find-freedom.co
