What should have been an easy blockbuster hit has turned into one of the saddest box office cases of 2023. "The Color Purple" made $18.1 Million on its Christmas Day opening, but it's projected to lose between $80 million and $100 million, and to make matters worse the industry isn't taking the "Oscar bait." What happened? Why did a movie with a seal of approval from Stephen Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey tank so quickly? I don't know if it's because it's an international film and we (Americans) are considered a foreign market or if Japanese studios think Americans won't enjoy it, but the noise surrounding this movie is too quiet and it's not getting the marketing it deserves. The more I think about it, the angrier I get. If the point was to commemorate and celebrate 100 years of Disney, I expected better. The plot is weak, the protagonist is unlikeable and the sidekick goat is obnoxious.
