Nigel Latta on Shocking Cancer Diagnosis, Outliving 6-12 Months' Life Expectancy, Managing Adversity

Nigel Latta, New Zealand’s best-known psychologist, shared a video to Facebook on the evening of September 5, 2024, announcing he has been living with cancer.

After sharing his shocking news, he received an outpouring of love and media articles because we all feel like we know Nigel Latta- even Lorde's mum left a comment giving Nigel credit for how she raised her kids.

For the past 15 years, Nigel has been responsible for some wildly successful TV projects including the Beyond the Darkland’s series (which I loved) and the politically incorrect series with episodes devoted to parents, teenagers and grown-ups. He is also the author of seven best-selling books.

I had never met Nigel before this podcast but, like a lot of Kiwis, I felt like I knew him. Nigel is everybody’s mate- a national treasure.

This is small part of the Nigel Latta story with a focus on lessons he has learned since the cancer diagnosis and being forced to face his own mortality.

  • Cam Rodger, Managing Director of Entain in NZ - Answering Tough Questions about Betting in NZ

    54:06|
Cameron Rodger is the Managing Director of Entain New Zealand, that’s the company that runs the TAB and the brand new app “Betcha.”I invited Cam on for a podcast conversation because Betcha is jumping on board as a podcast sponsor. I thought it would be a good idea to put some questions to him about what Entain is doing to manage harmful gambling in New Zealand. And what sort of guard rails they have to keep the people who need help safe.I like having a small sports bet every now and then, but I am well aware that it does a lot of damage to some people so I was keen to get an understanding of the work they do. This isn’t a puff piece. But it isn’t a hit job either. Cam and Entain didn’t request the questions in advance. Nor did they ask for any content control.I found it informative, and I learned a lot and I hope you do too. This episode is not sponsored by Entain or anyone else. If this content raises any issue for you or someone you care about, get in touch with the PGF- Problem Gambling Foundation for free professional and confidential help.Freephone - 0800 664 262Text 5819Email: help@pgf.nz

  • Base Jumper & Author, Sequoia Schmidt - How Losing Father & Brother in Avalanche Inspired Her

    01:34:54|
Sequoia Schmidt. Wow- where do I begin? How can you possibly give just a one paragraph intro to someone who has had such a unique and full on 33 years of life.Let’s start with the cool stuff:  After being born and raised in Napier, Sequoia set up her own publishing company in Texas at 16 and has written best-selling books. She also likes to do extreme stuff in her spare time, like base jumping, skydiving, mountain climbing, silence retreats. Then there’s the less glamourous stuff: A tumultuous childhood with family dynamics that can only be described as complicated which saw her end in foster care and ultimately moving to the US to the care of an incredible grandparent. Then losing her dad and brother to an avalanche on K2 in Pakistan in 2013 and going on a mission to find their remains. We discuss how these events reshaped her life and led her to explore her fears and resilience. And the lessons learned from her past (oh, and I forgot to mention a lifetime ban from the Warehouse in Hawkes Bay). There is a lot to unpack with the Sequoia Schmidt story, and there is no way we could do it justice in just one podcast…but we do unpack a lot. I loved this chat and I hope you do too. Thanks to the incredible team at Generate for making this episode possible. They are award-winning KiwiSaver specialists.Checking if you’re in the right fund and making the most of your account can really boost your retirement lifestyle. And that’s where Generate can help.Their KiwiSaver advisers can meet with you online or in person, you place or theirs, to go over your options, and make sure your investment is working for you. Half an hour of your time and it could the best investment you ever make for your future self. • Brodie Kane Speaks Out on “Toxicity” of NZ Media, Building an Independent Business, Abortion & More!

    02:10:09|
Brodie Kane was one of my first guests when I launched my podcast early in 2022.Since then, we have got even closer and have become running friends. So, this is her second appearance on the podcast- but this chat is very different to the first one because my very talented mate has now gone and written a book about her life experiences- the good the bad and the ugly. Oooh there is some ugly in there! The books awesome by the way- "Woman Uninterrupted" Brodie is an open book, she is forthright, opinionated and outspoken so nothing was off the table- we cover some crunchy topics here including the public backlash she experienced as a reporter on TV, her redundancy at the start of the pandemic and how she dusted herself off and bounced back, an abortion she had in her 20s and her decision to speak about it publicly. And lots of fun stuff, including her relationship with her parents and her time in the army before getting into mediaThis chat is a celebration of resilience and self-acceptance from a woman I am lucky enough to call a good friend. Marc Moore is the founder and creative director of the fashion brand Stolen Girlfriends Club.Marc launched Stolen almost 20 years ago and is still going strong, surviving the pandemic, the GFC and all the other challenges small businesses must face. Some of the stuff we cover includes how his brand was born almost 20 years ago and the steep highs as well as the very deep lows of growing a fashion business:How it became popular with some A list celebrities, including Miley Cyrus and The Weeknd, who wore one of their tops onstage for a performance with Taylor Swift. Also, we get into some deeply personal stuff, including his early years in Raglan being raised by a solo mum and his confusing relationship with his dad, the late Marc Hunter from the rock band Dragon. This stuff is hard to talk about so I cannot thank Marc enough for being so open to sharing such personal and vulnerable topics. Before doing this episode, I knew Marc in passing and I always thought he was a cool guy. Now I know for sure he is. I hope you guys love this episode as much as I did. • Comedian Cori Gonzalez-Macuer on Getting Fired & Mental Breakdown, How Fatherhood Saved his Life

    01:34:26|
Cori Gonzalez Macuer, one of New Zealand’s most popular comedians. Also, a very talented actor- probably best known for his work in Wellington Paranormal or the Taiki Waititi and Jermaine Clement movie “What we do in the shadows.”Whether you are familiar with Cori’s work or not, I think you’ll like this conversation. It’s a rollercoaster ride of emotion, humor, and introspection. We explore his early years in Chile, his 21-year career in comedy, his mental health battles, the suicide of his father, the sting of criticism, the fallout from controversial jokes, his relationship with his daughter Freddy and why Academy Award winning actor Adrian Brody is a big dick.
