The Dom Harvey Podcast
Hadyn Jones (TVNZ journalist & host)
Hadyn Jones is an ultramarathon runner (that’s one of the caps he wears).
He is also a well-known current affairs TV host. You may recognize the face or voice from Fair Go, Seven Sharp, the good sorts segment at the end of the news on Sunday night (a really cool feature he has done for years).
He is also a dad and a husband. All roles that he juggles successfully. His secret includes getting his long runs done when the kids are in bed!
We discussed his running journey, his career including his early years working with Sir Paul Holmes and the decision to relocate and work from Taranaki. We talk about his home life, his recollections from losing his dad at the age of 5 and much more.
I loved sitting down with Haydn and I hope you guys enjoy it too.

Left School At 13, Couldn't Read, Became A Heavyweight: Shane Cameron
02:06:03|Shane Cameron is a return guest to the podcast. He was one of the first people to say yes to this podcast, before I’d even released an episode back at the start of 2022. A lot has changed in both our lives since then so I thought a catch up was on the cards. We talk about living in a tent as a little boy, struggling with reading and writing and leaving school at 13. Then going from life on the farm to sharing a boxing ring with Mike Tyson. His stories about his time spent training with Tyson are something else.We also get into the David Tua fight: the buildup, the devastating loss, picking himself up afterwards, and how the two of them ended up drinking tequila in Shane’s garage years later.Plus, life after boxing, depression, his fear of dementia, and what gives him purpose these days.Shane’s a humble guy who’s very open about both the things he’s proud of and the things he wishes he’d done differently. I really enjoyed this catch-up, and I hope you do too.***Massive thanks to my long-term podcast sponsor, Generate. We’ve all got that one mate who’s convinced they’ve worked out how to beat the market, usually with a lot of confidence and no actual expertise. I sat down with a Generate KiwiSaver adviser when they came on as sponsor in 2023, and it was one of those conversations that made me kick myself for not doing it years earlier.A Generate adviser can help you figure out what fund type is best suited to your KiwiSaver goals. Ex-Meth Dealer Mum: Police Raids, Meth Mouth, Home Detention & Starting Over
01:27:23|Bex Chapman emailed me asking to share her story, then flew herself up from Wellington to be here. And I’m really pleased she did.Today, she’s a mum of two, a builder and a keen runner. But for years, her life revolved around methamphetamine: using it, selling it, abusive relationships and repeated arrests. In this conversation, Bex is incredibly honest about that life, the impact on her family, and the guilt she still carries about the years she missed with her oldest daughter. We talk about what finally helped her get clean, the role running has played in her recovery and rebuilding a life she once couldn’t imagine having. We recorded this on her 36th birthday- 6 years after she last used meth. And she’s sharing her story because she wants other people to know change is possible.***This episode is proudly brought to you by the legends at Odoo.https://www.odoo.com/r/bl1TIf you run a business, here’s a question: How many different bits of software are you paying for right now?One for accounting. Winston Peters: The Questions He Wasn’t Expecting
01:21:04|Thanks to Odoo for sponsoring this episode: https://www.odoo.com/r/mgSMy guest today is Winston Peters. And in almost 400 episodes I don’t think I’ve ever had my research corrected quite so many times. This is most definitely the most combative guest I’ve had on the podcast!Whatever your opinion of Winston as a political figure, I was keen to get to know the person behind the suit and the 50-year public career that has seen him work alongside a total of 12 different Prime Ministers. We talk about growing up as one of 11 kids, the lessons from his mum and dad, ageing, faith, regrets, what keeps him going and how he’d like to be remembered. There’s plenty of banter, a few prickly moments, and a lot of questions Winston would have preferred I didn’t ask.***This episode is proudly brought to you by the legends at Odoo.If you run a business, here’s a question: How many different bits of software are you paying for right now?One for accounting. Mike King: The Stroke, The Rock Breakdown & His ‘God Complex’
02:16:23|Mike King is back for his second appearance on the podcast.Mike was one of my very first guests when I launched the podcast in 2022, and a lot has happened since then. In this conversation, we get into his charity I Am Hope and Gumboot Friday, the criticism that comes with his work, and whether being so outspoken sometimes gets in the way of what he’s trying to achieve. But some of my favourite parts are much more personal. Mike talks about waiting 45 years to hear his dad say “I love you”, his regrets as a father, getting sober, and the counsellor he credits with saving his life. There are some big laughs, some uncomfortable questions, and A LOT of brutal unfiltered honesty.***Massive thanks to my long‑term podcast sponsor, Generate. Colin & Manu On The Brutal Kitchens That Made Them
01:43:08|Colin Fassnidge and Manu Feildel are two of Australia’s biggest stars. You might know them from the TV shows My Kitchen Rules or Off the Grid. They're hilarious together, and their friendship truly is something special. But it wasn't always that way. In fact, they started out as enemies. We talk about how that feud turned into a beautiful bromance.Colin opens up about his recent drug controversy and the impact it had on his family and his mental health. And Manu shares some incredibly personal stories about his childhood, his absent father, and a career setback that sent him into a dark place. There's plenty of laughs in this one, but there's also a lot of honesty and vulnerability. 02:10:34|Mark Law is a former NZSAS soldier. He’s survived an armed ambush in Africa, he nearly died from a flesh-eating disease, and built a helicopter business that included owning a Black Hawk. But he's probably best known for what he did on December 9, 2019, when Whakaari White Island erupted. Mark flew his helicopter into the danger zone and helped rescue people who were trapped on the island. In this conversation, he takes us inside that horrific day, the controversial WorkSafe prosecution that followed, and shares some incredible stories from his life. The biggest surprise for me was his answer when I asked him about the hardest thing he's ever been through…and it wasn't any of those experiences.***This episode is proudly brought to you by the legends at Odoo.. https://www.odoo.com/r/iyAeIf you run a business, here’s a question: How many different bits of software are you paying for right now?One for accounting.
