On this episode we kick off with overview of the developer, Ground Shatter games ("Ground Shatter is the feeling of finding a Neo Geno MVS amidst the cranes and pushers of a sea-side arcade. If Ground Shatter was a caring, nurturing parent, it would be your mum. If it iwas an insult it would be 'your mum'...") and then work through the interesting mechanics used in this deck-building tactics game. The deck-building components of FITS feel a bit at odds with the tactics; you need to always make sure that you have some movement abilities, but you have virtually no draw/discard available so you just have to keep adding movement along with any fighting cards you put in there.
Most of the time we don't mind trying to juggle this sort of deck construction in a deck-builder but in FITS it ended up feeling a bit more frustrating than usual since the game is simultaneously a full-on tactics game. The marriage of these two genres felt a bit like it ended up detracting from both rather than leading to something greater than the sum of its parts. We also bumped on the lack of run-to-run variance: the early game especially feels very samey and is a bit of a slog to get through. Totally could see this working for some folks but didn't click with us.

We did both enjoy that HoT gives you some different enemy patterns rather than the slow approach from all corners of the screen, plus the bosses and elite fights are much more bullet-hell feeling and require some actual gameplay. Plus the item system is a bit neat, makes it feel extraction-shooter adjacent, though for all the talk about the game being Diablo-inspired we found the loot to be pretty underwhelming.There are definitely things to like in this game and it's clear why folks who really like survivors-likes click with this one: the sheer number of achievements / quests alone could give the motivated player a lot of reasons to keep at it. For us that are less motivated by achievements, after finishing the five base halls we found ourselves not really sure what we were playing for. The user-applied difficulty modifiers seemed like a circular grind to just allow you to get items to allow you to keep grinding. That loop feels totally fine in some games but we bumped on it hard here.51. Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor
